I watched Advent Children last night.

Lol, don't worry 'bout that, it takes a bit to get used to how to write it.

-Prepares to start obsessing- You can skip over all of this writing to the end where I actually start recommending stuff to you if you want XD;.

You play .hack//G.U. (Or Infection/Mutation/Outbreak/Quarantine, but I tried one of those and didn't get it at ALL XD, plus they're uber hard to find these days), you watch .hack//SIGN, Legend of the Twilight Bracelet (alternate telling of Legend of the Twilight), ROOTS (Prequel to G.U., which I actually don't reccommend really because the art and animation gets wierd past episode 13 -- on the other hand, it WILL help you understand G.U. better, although I believe episodes 21 through the end have spoilers) and you read .hack//Legend of the Twilight, G.U. + (Alternate telling of G.U. in manga format), or XXXX (Alternate telling of I.M.O.Q. in manga format). There are also light novels (A.I. Buster and Another Birth) -- I've read the first volume of both of them, they're pretty good.

I've watched/played/read the following (In chronological order of the storyline):
.hack//A.I. Buster (I'm never going to get over how wierd that title sounds XD)
.hack//SIGN (And most of its accompanying OVAs)
.hack//Another Birth
.hack//XXXX
.hack//Outbreak (Believe me when I say I didn't get very far in this. XD)
[ ^ These three are the same story, so they happen at the same time, although Outbreak is smack-dab in the middle D:.]
.hack//GIFT (A random parody-like thing made by the creators of .hack)
.hack//Legend of the Twilight Vol. 1
.hack//ROOTS
.hack//G.U. Volume 1: Rebirth
.hack//G.U. Volume 2: Reminisce
.hack//G.U. Volume 3: Redemption
.hack//G.U. + Vol. 1
.hack//G.U. + Vol. 2
.hack//G.U. TRILOGY (A movie based on the events on .hack//G.U., with several changes in storyline)
[All of the series starting in //G.U. are also the same basic story, but they deviate from eachother at some point].

The next in the series is .hack//LINK, which has only been released in Japan so far. D:

Even though they all connect to each other, you don't need to watch/play/read all of the different parts of the .hack franchise, just make sure that wherever you start it's at the beginning of that particular series (I.e. I started G.U. at volume 3 and was completely comfused D: ).

But personally, if you're looking to watch an anime I'd recommend .hack//SIGN, it was amazing, although it starts off a bit boring (for like, eight episodes or something XD Lol). I believe there's twenty-six episodes, but there's a bunch of OVAs as well. Just to warn you, a same-sex relationship is implied (mostly in one of the OVAs), I honestly didn't care since it was such a great show but meh.
If you're looking to read a manga, I'd recommend Legend of the Twilight, simply because all of the volumes are out so you won't be stuck waiting for the next volume for months and months XD. I've only read the first volume of //LOTT though, and they're less serious than most of the other .hack related series. But if you don't mind waiting for the other volumes then I'm really enjoying G.U. + so far, and XXXX is off to a great start too.
If you want to play a game, then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE G.U. SERIES, I haven't had that much fun with a videogame series since Kingdom Hearts. To this day, they still have my all-time favorite art style of any anime or videogame I've ever watched or played. It's a combination of cel-style shading and conventional 3-D graphics, and it looks GORGEOUS, the characters seem to glow...It's just...Wow. ;D
