There is more to Japan than Tokyo. I think a lot of Westerners forget that.

And from what I've read/seen, otaku is generally something to not be proud of over there. In fact it's a borderline insult.

Also from the embracing the American culture, I've seen mixed signals. On the one hand, there's McDonalds and KFC in Tokyo but on the other hand there's a general distrust of foreigners.

    Japan is strange.

Tokyo is the only place in Japan that actually cares about what the rest of the world thinks about them. You can see this by the fact that the age of consent is eighteen in Tokyo while thirteen in the rest of it. Something like that.

Everything I do has a purpose. Whether it's inteneded or not. For once that was intended.

Yet Japan as a whole have problems with fertility rates and teenagers have a very low amount of sex. Apparently.
Many are very... shy. Especially the guys.

That's a weird one. Otaku actually comes from archaic Japanese and was originally an honorific that indicated extreme respect due to it referring not to the person, but that person's entire clan (Or "house." This will be important.) From what I gather, in modern Japanese it originally referred to a mild hikkikomori who would leave the house only for work and necessities. In other words, an otaku was basically anyone who stayed home constantly watching anime, reading manga, or exclusively doing some other activity for entertainment. So you could have a mystery novel otaku, or a video game otaku, etc. It went from referring to a person's house (as in clan) to referring to a house dweller. Now it basically means the same thing as geek, which is an obsessive enthusiast over something that is not practical. So it went from an honorific to a condition to an insult that is only insulting when coming from a person who is not classified as otaku.

A general distrust of foreigners is very common just about anywhere. Humans are just like that.
I thought it was that an urban area had it as 18 while the countryside and other "sticks" areas were 13.
Paranoia. You'd be surprised how afraid any given human an be of its fellow humans.
