To clarify, the shiny/normal and female/male thing was completely random. I don't do favouritism here.

You live in Kanto, so your Professor is Oak.
You go to Oak's Lab and collect your Pokédex. You've also been given 5 Pokéballs, so you can catch more random Pokémon.
Welp, because of the way Kanto is built, you can only really go to Viridian from here, though you can pass straight through it and head to the first gym at Pewter if you wanted.

Your region is Kanto, so your Professor is Oak.
You go to Oak's Lab and collect your Pokédex. You've also been given 5 Pokéballs, so you can catch more random Pokémon.

Alright! I'm off to see Prof. Oak. I need my Pokeballs and my Pokedex. Then I'm off to Route 1 to catch some Rattatats.
