I guess some of you have heard about this, as it happened May 9th. If not; Wouter Weylandt, a cyclist fell and died under Giro d'Italia. Only 26 years and leaves behind a pregnant girlfriend. It's tragic. I actually saw a clip of the aftermath (when he laid on the ground, and it was not pretty, I recommend you don't look for it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cycling/13333589.stm <- That's the article about the actual accident. At the next stage (10th of May) they honored him in a very beautiful way that I think you should all see. After today though, the team decided to withdraw from the Giro. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cycling/13344822.stm Wouter Weylandt, may you Rest In Peace.
Yeah, it's pretty big news here. It's a tragic accident indeed, especially considering his girlfriend and yet-to-be-born kid. The case will probably re-open the debate (if it didn't already) of whether the organizers of cycle events invest too much in sensational value and not enough in the safety of the competitors.
My friends mum was there when he died, and she was saying how everyone was in shock, and that there were people crying everywhere and stuff. Its really awful when something like that happens, and I feel so sorry for his family and girlfriend.... And that tribute is so beautiful.... But I think that if they took more care of safety and stuff,he might still be alive.. Though I guess we'll never know now :/
