Knowledge can be gained through studying books and such things. It puts us in the way of wisdom, but wisdom is experiential; it is a truth one recognizes in the outside world that already exists inside them. You cannot learn wisdom, you must awaken to it.

Wisdom is more divine whereas knowledge is intellectual

can wisdom be gained without knowledge or do you gain wisdom as you seek knowledge?

Wisdom can be gained seeking knowledge, in my opinion, because you must have gone through many things to learn certain things, ultimately giving you the wisdom you never thought you would get...

You make the sweetest topics, dude!

Anyway, I think wisdom is gained by learing not just knowledge but the truth itself.

Wisdom is normally something you gain over time and experiences. Knowledge is something can get through study and reading, but not through experiences.
Its always a hard crossing line wheter its wisdom or knowledge you posses.

Personally I consider myself pretty smart as in I have alot of knowledge. I would not consider myself wise since I havent lived that long and really havent had experiences that I can teach of.

I think I would have more wisdom then...I have lived through plenty of tough times and have had trials presented that tested me both physically, and mentally. whereas im not the biggest on 'booksmarts'

You gain wisdom by your years. The older you grow the more you come to understand. Knowledge does come from books and different artifacts that we study, but as you grow you start to know what to do and what not to do. Having common sense is wisdom. Basically, with or without books you are wise.

I do not think common sense is wisdom. In a way, yes. But the some people who aren't wise at all at least have common sense. Wisdom is like a deep understanding of the world in which we live and an awakening withing yourself which is gained over time and experience, IMO

If you didn't have common sense how could that person be wise? Books are not everything, niether is becoming a hermit, shunning the world, and studying plants and animals. Common sense is what makes you wise- for common sense is common sense and without it you'd just have 'book' smarts. Sure, you'll get knowledge, but you won't know many other things. Wisdom can go two ways, common sense and book smarts. But I think common sense should come first.:p

Anybody who has a lot of wisdom has common sense, but what I mean is there are people with common sense that aren't exceedingly wise in any way, just average

MuffinMan, you can be Wise and still lack the knowledge of common sense.

I know PLENTLY of people who are in the Genius levels of Smart. But they are quite ignorant when it comes to everyday hanging out.

genius level of smarts means knowledge more than wisdom, so it doesn;t neccesarily mean they're wise, especcially if they're ignorant.

I know who isn't one of them! :p

    Anyway...

wisdom is gained by experience, not knowledge.

Maybe that knowledge cannot be obtained by the unwise. But then, how do you gain more wisdom? Are you just born naturally wise???

Well, in truth, there is no 'un-wise person', they choose that path. They are not born with wisdom, nor are they born unwise. Wisdom is gained from years, not doing like Budha, becoming a Hermit, and leaving your family behind.

Knowledge may be gained from books but may not be practical. Wisdom is gained from experience and so is infinitely more practical.

Well, yes, knowlege is booksmarts, but wisdom is more than experience to me. It is a mixture of knowlege and experience. You cannot be wise without some intelligence. That's what I think.

And I'm going to post a bunch of other reflections on wisdom now. I love these quotes. ^^ Hope you like some of them too!

"Wise men learn more from fools than fools from the wise."
Author: Cato (Marcus Porcius Cato "The Elder") (a/k/a Cato the Censor)

"Wise men are more dependent on fools than fools on wise men."

"Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life."
    Author: Sandra Carey

"The key to wisdom is knowing all the right questions."
    Author: John A Simone, Jr.

"It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf."
    Author: Walter Lippman

"Experiences are savings which a miser puts aside. Wisdom is an inheritance which a wastrel cannot exhaust."
    Author: Karl Kraus

"A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds."
    Author: Francis Bacon

"By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is the easiest; and third, by experience, which is the bitterest."
    Author: Confucius

"To teach is to understand. To learn is wisdom. To learn together is understanding wisdom."
    Author: Sid Mendenhall

I don't think you gain wisdom until a person truly means exactly what it is, then you are wise.
