Are there any error messages that come up at all?

Can you start in safe mode? Press and hold the F8 key as your PC boots up.

It might also be worth checking all your peripheral connections etc. It may be that a driver has been installed incorrectly.

Did you changed/installed anything before this happened?

Additionally, is it just terribly slow to go into Windows XP, or does it not go at all? Much easier to deal with if it just takes a long time. ;o

Definitely do what Kitty said and try to boot into Safe Mode, however.

I'll try to assist. This method may establish if one of your programs is interfering or if your Windows XP is corrupted.

If you can get into safe mode (repeatedly tapping F8 when booting up PC), open the Start menu, click Run.

Type in "msconfig" without the quotes, and then go to the Services tab and check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box. Then click "Disable all."

Now go to the Startup tab and click "Disable all" again. Then click OK and restart your PC in normal mode. If it boots up fine, then a program must've been interfering and you can narrow it down by activating each one separately with the MSConfig tool.

If that didn't work, then you may need to use a Windows XP Recovery Disc.

I'm going to second what Janime6 said. Those little applets for stuff like iTunes, Skype, Steam, and all that might be helpful, but they don't need to start up very time you turn on your PC. They also can make your system lag on startup because all of them are trying to start up at once. I've turned off pretty much all of my services and my PC (also a Windows XP machine) boots up fine, if not faster than before.

Also check and see if your system had a major update. Mine sometimes starts slower if it downloads 7+ updates, installs them, doesn't ask for a restart and I then shut it down when I'm done with it. The next day it's a bit slower.

If it isn't anything that is interfearing with your pc then let me ask this did you try a system restore to see if anything you might have downloaded at some point is causing you PC to not start? Cus that is the issue with my moms quite often.=/
