It gives users a sense of accomplishment; it's the same thing when you're not a Premium Member yet and get a different user title after you've accumulated a certain post count.

So my point isn't getting across and my main arguments are rarely being addressed, along with certain people starting to get personal, so i'm going to put this forward broad post forward.

You guys don't like the spamming of likes? Fair enough, I agree, it's not a problem that I've ever heard complained about but apparently it's a thing now people have become vocal.
I'll ask around and see if Likes can be edited to be restricted in their usage a bit more, similar to rep use to be.

Otherwise, people are basically telling me to pick a side, because the neutral opinion and perspective seems to lack credibility.
I don't want it back because it's not a necessity, you can still positively rep someone with a like, and the argument about 'constructive criticism' can still be given through profile posts or in the thread itself or more privately in Personal convos.
The abuse of the Like system I agree should be addressed and we'll see what we can do.
Otherwise I see no actual benefit from this system apart from nostalgia reasons, which isn't reason enough to change a complete system. And rep was abused in the past, this system won't topple the problems of the current, simply it will be called something different.

And so far, many people in this thread are currently abusing the like system to try and prove a point. The fact you're abusing the system, isn't giving me confidence you won't abuse the next one.

I have never received any feeling of accomplishment from amassing large amounts of material points I cannot spend, similar to how a predetermined user title written years ago by some user for a contest with little to no originality also gave me no sense of accomplishment.

Those who implemented these things are trying, but they're efforts go unnoticed in those particular areas. Give the people what they want, I say.

    It gives me nothing.
I would rather have a personal message from the person who liked my post, even if it's something as small as "lol", than these "materials".
Also, likes are meant to give you satisfaction. You don't need satisfaction for your satisfaction.

    I just remembered:

There was a member around here a few months ago that didn't post or do ANYTHING except give his friends "likes". Each of those friends went from around 10 likes to 45 (as an example) in less than an hour. Limiting likes and implementing the Rep system would not allow stuff like this to happen.

Do you know how often we're slammed with this? Normally, we do very little work so I understand when the door is shut in our face... We found the app, and the instructions. It doesn't matter if it's a necessity. If the internet existed in a land of necessity, then we'd still be using geocities. It's about what the users want in the community they are giving you. I don't think you quite grasp this concept- If all of your users went away, there would be no one viewing the adspace. What this means is, the owner would not be profiting on the website and it's huge bandwidth costs. That would mean your volunteer job here is toast and the community would fall to shambles. To put it plainly, you want to do things for your users. Especially when you're trying to win them over and say their voice matters with a damn member council. How are we supposed to vote with confidence in a member council, and trust we're being brought everything we should know if we can't make a simple suggestion go through when we do all the work other than the implementation?

And no one has mentioned nostalgia other than me. And all I said on those points were 1. It's one of the site's staples. This a fact. 2. When I posted a screenshot of how I remember getting into rep. This was never a call back to "glory days," this was a wish and was stated as such.

Except you can't spam abuse a system with limits...

Well, the beautiful thing about democracy in theory is that even though you are in a position of power, your vote only counts as much as ours. If the majority of the user base votes in agreement with this suggestion, even if you and other staff members do not, it should not influence the action taken at the completion of the vote. In theory, of course. If by chance the staff decides to overrule the expressed want of it's forum, that would make it more of a dictatorship, no?

Even if you could limit likes the way rep was limited, if rep CAN be implemented why not? It would be like the likes, but with a negative rep feature as well as positive and comments can be added easily. The like system and rep system are both essentially used by member as popularity tools of sorts. Like "LOOK AT ME I HAVE X AMOUNT OF LIKES OR X AMOUNT OF REP GEMS" except with rep it's a BETTER representation because not only does it allow for positive but also negative. The like system is like saying "IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL", but negative feedback and criticism are just as important as the positive side of things.

Another thing is that adding a "Dislike" button that can be exploited as easily as the "Like" button, so many members would gang up on others and pretty much go out of their way to go and dislike every post of the one member they don't like. I'm not even kidding, there are A LOT of members here that are that mean.

Agreed. Not much to add, really.

Basically this. The systems should remain distinct, because each serves its purpose well enough; but in this case, our purposes would be better served by rep. Adding a dislike function opens the door too wide for abuse, while adding comments essentially makes it the same thing as we're asking for, but for more work.

People did that with rep too. Having their friends gang up on and derep people - except because of the added value of rep, those situations were actually taking something from the members. Not to mention a lot of the dereps given were dumb to begin with [ie: this person has a font I dislike, or no given reason at all ]. When I first reached premium, I was given a derep when I made a thread about having done so that said 'congratulations, you've accomplished nothing'. I don't remember ever getting derepped for a valid reason. People were just mean with it. Not saying the same will happen now in 2013 but I just wonder what kind of dereps are you guys so eager to give?

    >Added value.

See, rep is more valuable. Jayn said it. :P

Honestly though, the intent for abuse was of the big things about this app. It can't be abused. You could probably even tie the report button to a rep comment. Much more efficient. It means more cleanup work for you guys when people cause trouble, but be, honest, whaddya guys do anyway? :P

Yes, but that only reduces the user's likes count because you disliked a post you previously liked.

For example, you have a user with 500 likes:
    • Liking one of their posts will bring that count up to 501 likes.
    • Disliking the posts you just liked will bring that count back to 500 likes.
    • Disliking one of their posts directly will bring that count down to 499 likes.

Not really, because limits could be set.

You said Unlike, not dislike. There is a difference because we do already have an "Unlike" feature, and the dislike button only serves to make it more like rep. Why not just get rep back, then?

That's not even a real word according to Mozilla Firefox's red underline, so my bad there, but my example still stands.

I'm...I'm not getting this. So it just comes down to a name? Because obviously in a Rep vs Like system you would not have both, but if the Like system was reworked into having everything the Rep system has(Comments, limits, dislike, values, etc.) it still wouldn't be good enough?

Well then we need to ask people if they would want to. But that link, if you clicked it, says it can be converted from likes and from vBulletin.
