That is basically how it is presented. I can basically see it being presented two ways. And the atheists are probably not going to like the second one.

Realistic: The act of living without sight takes quite a bit of focus and acts as a distraction from his darkness.

Cheesy: It represents faith. By living without sight he had to live by faith, following his heart. When he removes the blindfold it represents him once again relying on what he can see and the darkness takes over.

There's a lot of good answers going here, but I think I'll post anyway. :)

The others posted pretty good answers for the first one, so I won't go there.

As for how he could "See" with his blindfold on, I don't think he could. I believe it is a mix between his ability to sense the darkness, and just the know-how of fighting without sight. Sometimes, if you live long enough with your eyes shut, you can tell just by how things move around you what is happening. When he fought Xion in Beasts castle, for example, He turned his back and started to walk away. She got up and rushed at him, breathing hard and clattering over the stone floor. He obviously could have heard her and then just ducked at the right moment. Another example (One that's not Kingdom Hearts related), is in the Karate Kid remake with Jaden Smith, Mr. Han put up a curtain between himself and Dre (The Karate Kid). Then, using a long stick with a punching glove on the end, he started to attack Dre through the curtain. At first, Dre just kept getting hit, but eventually, he was able to block every attack with ease, even though he couldn't see where it was going to attack. That is how I think Riku could fight. And that also answers the third question of how he beat up Roxas so easily. :)

I'd like to emphasize that this is Kingdom Hearts. c: Not everything has to make sense by our standards.

Riku has some incredible senses, as we saw in Chain of Memories with his sense of smell. Blind peoples' other senses are often heightened to compensate for their loss. So, there is a possibility that Riku wore the blindfold to attempt to strength himself. Clearly, after what happened in the first game, Riku is not spectacular at seeing darkness from light (or right from wrong I suppose, I think most of the time he was pretty conscious of what he was doing, despite it getting out of hand). Because his "eyes" (I say that in a metaphorical sense) had served him so poorly in the past, but he was able to small darkness in Castle Oblivion, perhaps he wanted to train himself to be more aware of when he was approaching the wrong path?

I'm not sure if any of that makes sense, haha. Mixt's logic seems pretty sound, though.

I believe it's simply because when he don't see, he can sense better the Darkness and Light. Without the blindfold he can prevents himself to turning into Ansem-Heartless form.

I think it was to sort of prove mickey wrong (don't rage at me if my theory's not correct, i haven't played re:com or 358/2 days in a while)

But i'm sure mickey said something about you can't trust anything more than your eyes, and so i think this was a way to try prove mickey wrong.

also remember how sora said "who are you trying to fool?" or something along those lines in kh2 when riku gained his original form back, and riku said "my self" i think that was because riku couldn't prove mickey wrong.

also I'm sure it's not to compress the darkness in himself, because seeing your surroundings and compressing the darkness doesn't really have a link, even if riku released it all when he did take his blindfold off, i doubt removing the blindfold had anything to do with it.

But there can be loads of other reasons for why he wears the blindfold, my theory might be wrong so don't rage at me if it is. xD

I believe everyone else has already explained it fairly well, but:

    1. The blindfold is symbolic. To him, Ansem's presence in heart was corrupting him to darkness again, but he didn't want to admit it. As Mickey says: 'His eyes could not lie' it is generally accepted that a person's eyes can be the most expressive part of them. So by covering his own eyes, he was trying to hide the fact that he was becoming corrupted again- even from himself.

    2. Riku is a highly skilled fighter, so he, like Sora and the rest of the powerful characters, have a keen sense for their surroundings. Also, in CoM it is revealed that Riku can literally smell darkness- it is possible that by the time he fights Roxas, he has developed this sense to the point where it acts like echolocation, except instead of utilising sound waves it utilises scents.

    3. Riku was actually losing that fight badly until he accessed Ansem's power, at which point he transformed and no longer had the blindfold. In KH2 at the Sora/Roxas fight, Roxas is of the opinion he won that battle.

I always assumed that thanks to Fake-Ansem's presence, Riku's eyes were simply beginning to turn orange/yellow (meaning his eyes LITERALLY "couldn't lie") and the blindfold was simply a way to hide them (notice how the camera never shows Riku's eyes whenever he removes said blindfold).

Oh and the blindfold was most likely transparent so he could still see.

Riku has a blind fold because if he takes the blind fold off, he'll release the darkness that's inside of him. (Ansem). He probably could see with using his hearing sense. (The five body senses.) He beat up Roxas at the end of the battle because he unleashed his inner darkness. (Ansem).
