Why do people think the world will end in 2012?

According to the Maya there will be a baktun ending in 2012, a significant event being the end of the 13th 394 year period, but not the end of the world. Maya stelae occasionally show dates beyond 2012. Most of these are in the form of "distance dates", where a Long Count date is given with a distance date to be added.

Mayans accurately calculated the equinoxes and alignments with suns and other stars. The year 2012 is significant all across the board. In ancient sumerian texts, in Mayan texts, and even Nostradamus. It is not an apocalypse, all that means is "time of revealing" anyways.

Look up ancient Sumerians and Pheonicians, ancient Babylonian texts. Ancient gods by some are believed to be ancient astronauts or aliens if you will. Explains somewhat the missing link in evolution. Doesn't matter if you believe or not. It's not that they are coming back to end stuff, it is more like a time of revealing perhaps our origins and our purpose in the future will reveal itself. Who knows. Nothing could change...at all. But i have a strong feeling there are a lot of things that are indeed going to happen.

The year 2000 was just a hoax. Or rather i was the beginning of the end, and the beginning of a new era afterward. In divine, or even space time, things DON'T HAPPEN ALL AT ONCE. They happen over a period of a 100 years or more. Y2k was stupid...it just goes to show how easy people are manipulated.

The world is not ending....It is merely changing. Some say consciousness will expand, and people will begin to wake up. Look at all the information that is out there now, the movies that we have made (mind bogglers about existence like Matrix and MANY others). never before has so many theories and information been out there. People are indeed beginning to wake up, while others are still stuck in the newtonian world. What you see is what you get, humans are the only intelligent species, the world is flat and so forth.

Now what I think could happen is this: The next cycle is supposed to be about humans getting in touch with nature (Something like this, I might be wrong), and in 2012 the magnetic poles have been predicted to switch, now technology right now relies on polar north, when it switches things might work differently (or not at all), so if that does happen after awhile people will get used to this and become more in touch with nature. (Why do I think I sound like a hippie now?

"Despite the publicity generated by the 2012 date, Susan Milbrath, curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, stated that "We [the archaeological community] have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end" in 2012.

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc. in Crystal River, Florida. To render December 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

"There will be another cycle," says E. Wyllys Andrews V, director of the Tulane University Middle American Research Institute (MARI). "We know the Maya thought there was one before this, and that implies they were comfortable with the idea of another one after this."
