First of all that is MEGA-DISORGANIZED, every major OS sets up folders for you. use them.
    and it looks ugly

Secondly, I agreed to try and get the files from my friend's fried laptop (like that alliteration?). I went through a bit of a headache with file permissions and actually accessing the hard drive (had to hook it up to my computer using a SATA to USB device, and then go in with elevated permissions in Ubuntu to copy the files to my hard drive. still have to take ownership of them though). Once I got over that I was copying the files over and everything was good. I thought I was done and decided to just make sure there was nothing saved to the Desktop.

    There was.

    65GB.

I only put files on my desktop as a reminder (Homework, things I need to review, etc). Otherwise, I keep it pretty organized.
Also I have 130GB on my desktop. Problem, Misty? c:

    what the shit, fork
I mean the reminder thing okay, that's fine, but that's like... one file. How much do you have to remember.

130GB is cray. just hit that start button right there and click "my documents" or whatever it is depending on your OS. it is that easy. my grandma can do it.

106 GB of files on my desktop. You mad, Misty?

Although I do keep everything organized. Only one folder is shown on my desktop and it's appropriately named "Stuff". xD

The desktop is one of the nice pretty folders that is set up for you. It just has the special privilege of showing the contents on start up rather than having to dig them up. Though do to some sloppy clean up jobs I now have four separate desktop folders, two of which look virtually identical, that crap gets confusing.

YOU DON'T KNOW MISTY. I HAVE TONS OF HOMEWORK AND FINAL AND I NEED TO BE REMINDED OF EVERYTHING.

And I prefer having them on my desktop for some reason >_> It just makes them faster to access. I've never really used "My Documents" lol.

    My man!
The huge folder on my desktop is also called "Stuff" xDD. It's mostly movies, songs and shiz. Stop copying me dude.

The only thing that ends up on the desktop are screenshots that I take using Facetime.

    ... true, touche

    it's still annoying

like okay you spend that time picking out that pretty desktop and then you're going to obscure it with thirty bajillion word documents that you're probably never going to open again? seriously?

I have faith that some people can use the Desktop nicely but it ends up looking like this at a certain point. or this. you've got a cute baby bro, don't hide it.

And then you probably move them to a proper folder like a normal human, right?

Yeah, I see the Desktop as a nice reminder folder for things I want to get to quickly, such as programs and homework.

Also, I'm just too lazy to move stuff sometimes :]

And you can't deny Misty, my desktop has never been cleaner than now.

I actually took all the folders off my desktop and put them in my Documents. I didn't find a need for them right there, and it was ridiculously crowded on my desktop with all those folders. You should see my dad's laptop though. His job probably makes him so busy he has to have them all on there. A good 2/3 of the desktop is taken up by just folders.
Oddly enough, installing Rainmeter made me want to clean my desktop, because it was going to get more crowded with skins.

Mine is basically filled with the same stuff. Although at the moment, it's probably so big because I work with lossless videos and the file sizes are HUGE!

Fun fact: The original name of the folder was "DEFINITELY NOT PORNOGRAPHY" and inside that folder were various folders within folders named "PORN" to mess with anybody who tried to use my computer while I wasn't around.

Sometimes you don't even need to be that explicit. My lossless videos are in a folder called "RAW" do to them being uncompressed/unedited footage. I thought nothing of the name until my brother got the wrong idea.

I do have to laugh that people basically make a "My Documents" folder on their desktop and ignore the original one.

I usually end up uploading them to tumblr and then move them to trash.

Ditto, I've got a memory of where what I want is, and where things tend to be. I usually even group things together, rather than just taking it as it lays (one of the easy ways to annoy me on my computer is to right click organize my desktop).

So far I've only ever had one desktop case that made me cringe, it was a dual monitor setup that overflowed the first screen and used up more than half of the second. But even that annoying me is in large part because 90% of the time I saw it was when he brought his computer to class and thus only had the one monitor, and a lower resolution one at that.

I'm with you Misty. I honestly cannot stand files on my desktop, program shortcuts included. Everything is on my dock anyways.

I only put graphic requests on my desktop and such, but I immediately remove them when I'm finished, so I can look at my pretty desktop pictures. C:
