Seriously. I brought this up in a Spam Zone thread, but I wanted to continue this discussion. I don't understand why so many people think it's a horrible idea. I'm in a highly successful club with a bunch of awesome members. I don't see the problem here.

Some people don't consider it "cool." I don't really care honestly, I think if it's your thing, do it. Just because I don't really like Anime that much, doesn't mean I'm gonna make fun of people in the clubs. I do a lot of technical stuff with my music and my band. People could consider that nerdy, but because I'm in something "cool", it's not made fun of. I think people care about these kinds of labels things too much.

I have friends in anime club. I don't really see people "hating" on it. I'm not in the anime club because...well, recently the only thing I'm watching is Bleach and I haven't read manga. I'm not really in any activities or anything. Although a friend of mine still thinks I'm...well, not a loser because I'm me and can get away with having no life and being a slacker since I'm pretty smart...when I want to be. <-< Whatever, I guess people don't like Anime Club because they either see it as something that doesn't deserve a club(because they don't understand everything behind anime) or because it's out of the ordinary. Seriously, a lot of people would think you're awesome if you were in sports and they wouldn't care much if you were into anime. ...And I'm biased against all sports. Mainly American football. But I have my reasons.

I'm in an anime club at school, and we've just had our 30th member join. I think what made us so successful was we did more than just screen anime. We've had events on Japanese holidays, had a Japanese game night, held several traditional tea ceremonies and even had cosplay workshops before major cons. And when we did show anime we always tried to show different genres and picked animes no one had heard of before over the ones that everyone knows about, like Death Note or Bleach.

Why are people against it? It could be seen as nerdy, because most of us in our club are also avid video and table top gamers. Maybe it's also kind of immature, because in essence we are watching cartoons (heck, we've screened both Pokemon the First Movie and Digimon the Movie in our club). But you know, you like what you like, and truth be told we are the second largest club on campus aside from Student Government.

at my old high school there was an anime club (which was highly populated btw) and from what i've seen with anime, it's seems like something you either hate or love. i guess it depends if the majority of the people in your school are in the hate or love group.

I started my own last year and I'm still President if that means anything. I got like 2 people the first day, but turns out more of the cool kids like anime than the nerds, so its actually a pretty sweet club. At anime club, when you boil it down, all we wanna do is sit around for an hour watchingsomething and cracking jokes about it. So thats what we do with anime or shit like Star Wars, etc.

I wouldn't say hate, it's more like misunderstood. I'm not a member of my school's anime club, but respect those that are. The people who go to the club are considered nerdy and social outcasts. They're reading or watch something of another culture which is not understood by other members of the student body. It really reflects the ignorance of people.

Our anime club would like to do things like this but unfortunately we can't because the school doesn't recognize us as an 'official club,' partially because we're student-run and partially because they think we just sit around and watch cartoons.

I guess it's because people are unaware of what anime actually is. As others have said, they figure it's just like children's cartoons, when in reality it's much more. We try to study things about Japanese culture and learn more about it so I don't see the problem with it.

I guess perhaps because it's an uncommon interest, at least where I live.

It's more to do with embarrassment than hate. There is of course nothing wrong with anime clubs or being in anime clubs. There are a number of people who enjoy anime, but most are just afraid to admit it because they fear they will be committing social suicide and become a "nerd". It's the misconception "if you watch anime, you're a nerd" that makes people call out against the anime clubs. It's funny how most of the people who do call out against anime clubs are very much fond of anime. According to the Godly-Stamped Rules of High School, if you are in an anime club, it apparently means that you have no real friends and you are an obvious loser and among the low ranking kids in the school.

It's because a lot of the time it seems like the creepers tend to go to anime club, or the people who go OVERBOARD with liking it go to it. I have no problem with it as long as it's one of your interests, but... I will admit, our anime club had some creepers.

Well my school doesn't have an anime club, but I've got around this problem by chucking out any chance I had of being cool on day one. I joined the Warhammer club, carried my case to school every day, helped out in the library, got either Cs or Ds on non-written P.E. assessments and played a gameboy colour on the schoolbus with a kid two or three years younger than me.

You know what? Being uncool is actually pretty fun.

You remind me of someone, but he's extremely irratating and your not :3

I don't hate the idea, I'd join and I'm sure Bareri-San would be dragging me there. I think it's lack of understanding, I'm guessing that a lot of the people who we're like "WTF are you talking about", are like party people who get drunk and stuff.

Hey cathie... the next screening is on in the next couple of weeks...
    *drags you there*

lol Anyway, back onto the topic. I guess some people wouldn't like the idea of their being an anime club because it might seem a bit strange (referring to members of the club I go to here.) that fully grown and mature men and woman would just want to sit around for four hours while they watch cartoons (I'm the second youngest member that is there, the oldest is the grandfather of the youngest member).
The one I go to isn't actually one that's at my school, its in one of the university campuses in the city and they show decently rated stuff so that anyone can just walk in and watch it if they wanted to.
I think anime clubs are a good way to meet other people who share the same interests as yourself.

I'll be there xD oooh let's get manga

yeah I agree, [though the last time I went one member scared me by laughing at me for no reason] they are a great place to watch something that I like. [and it's one of the places that I can go to that I have to sit for 3 hours but don't mind] I also get to brush up on my Japanese which will help me in the future.

Oh trust me, sometimes we've got to bend over backwards and take it up the rear just to get a few hundred for our budget from SGA, but the school barely recognizes us as it is. We've had more room changes over the years than any other club.

The events, however, aren't school-wide functions, just special nights we host four our club members. We've tried to see if we could screen Miyazaki films as a school-wide event to no avail.

I guess the simplicity of have an Anime Club in school is from the publication Naruto or Inuyasha makes most other kids go "Ew, dorky stuff." It's just another weird thing for dorks with huge glasses to watch.
    Not the cool Dorks.

It's just a stupid idea in my opinion. All my friend I made in middle school loved anime, and we still do. We don't need an anime club to go and talk about it.
But people might want to meet more people with Anime.

My question isn't so much "Why do people who don't know about anime dislike the clubs?" as it is "Why do some anime fans (especially on this site) dislike the idea of an anime club?"

I've seen people on here that I know like anime, but when someone talks about how they're gonna start a club or join one, they think it's the stupidest idea they've ever heard.

There already is a family in the family section called Anime family.

Anyway, in my perspective, Highschool for me is very important. It's where we choose our lives. And maybe choose our fate.
And well, an Anime Club for respect is not really the way to go. It's really the way the kids say to stay away from them, they're weird, 'special' and such.
Or course none of the members are probably any of those, but that's what kids see through this.
    I like anime.
I just choose not to show it.
