Hmm, possibly because it didn't have the memory to play videos for DVD..or because its NINTENDO?

It wasn't DVD player that killed it.

If you want an honest answer, it is because it sold terribly in Japan. While it sold great in America thanks to Peter Moore being brilliant, the japan sales were terrible and Sega just decided to drop it. Peter Moore was pissed and was quoted cussing out many members of Sega. He then went to Microsoft where he did the same for the Xbox (terrible in Japan, awesome in America), but this time he was listened to and was given time. Now it is selling in Japan!... Too bad Peter Moore is now with frickin' EA >>

EDIT: Wow Entity... Wow.... Way to have absolutley no relevance ot the topic at all....

Okay, okay. Just saying it's from nintendo, but seriously, I digress. Well, maybe because the sega company decided to drop it really, just because the sales were not getting good review or something. I say that it was just the two things, it sucked with DVD reading and it also was worse really. Yeah, enigmaing there really, but it's still on topic.

    That's a pretty solid answer.

in this case, I hope sega would pick a console family for its games and stick with it.

(and I hope it's not the Wii)
and if this topic is dry now...
...if Sega made a system today, I wonder if it would be normal, or more like a Wii

Sega actually cannot make a system anymore and if they have to pick one system, it'd have to be the Wii. Much of Sega's stock was bought by Nintendo. Because of this, Sega was forced to make a deal with Nintendo that they would not return to making consoles and would make atleast one exclusive Nintendo game a year. Rumor has it that is why both the Conduit and Madworld are on Wii.

In short, Sega is pretty much the rockstar of the gaming industry. It came out strong, had three good albums (consoles) with many great songs (games), got high on cocaine and is now rapidly dieing.

    well this sucks
it better not happen with Playstation (I'm watching you, now, Microsoft.) It can't happen with PS because Sony isn't just a game company.

The dreamcast was advanced for it's time.

many people din't really grab the concept of online and much less the one of a portable thing that can connect to the controller.

Otherwise it was a pretty neat console.

    .. I don't believe the Dreamcast had online 0.o

Well, Sony can drop the Playsation just as much as Microsoft could drop the Xbox. However, while the PS3's sales aren't the best in America and Sony did lose over a billion dollars, they are still fine as far as I can see.

However, I don't see this happening to any of the big three for a looong time.

The same goes for Philips. Philips wasn't just a game company. They made alot of other **** and then came out with the CDi. It was a flop and they stopped making games. Especially after the terrible Zelda games. So sure, it may not have happened with Sony's consoles yet (same goes for Microsoft), but they can stop making games if their system becames a flop. They will continue to exist because they manufacture other stuff, but they won't be making game consoles.
