You should get FF X. It has a great story and my second favorite FF game.

FF XII has a pretty boring story. So yeah I would skip that story line.

well, I don't know which system you have, Im assuming PS2. All the Final Fantasy are worth playing and all great games, but each game is different and has strengths and weaknesses of it's own. Here is my take if your looking to get into Final Fantasy:

    1. Final Fantasy X - I recommend this one to anyone who has never played a Final Fantasy before. It has modern graphics, a good straight forward story, likable characters. It's also probably one of easier games in the series, allowing new players to get used to playing this style of game. It is also the first Final Fantasy to feature voice acting. Just a note, if you get this game play atleast 5 hours before deciding if you like it or not, you probably won't have any idea what is going on before then, don't let that discourage you.

    2. Final Fantasy VII - This is one of the best in the series, and definatly the most well known. The story and characters really draw you into it. The only reason I don't recommend this one above Final Fantasy X is that it's a lot older. If you don't mind reading all the dialogue, and can get over seeing older graphics this game is incredibly fun. The combat is very easy to get used to, and you won't have much problem getting into it.

    3. Final Fantasy IX - This was the last one that came out on Playstation, so it's graphics are a step above Final Fantasy VII's. If you are interested in playing a Classic Final Fantasy this is probably the best example I can offer. It's a lot different from the "newer" games in the series and might turn off some people who only started playing the games since Final Fantasy VII, but if the idea of playing an RPG with Traditional roles such as Black Mage, Theif, Summoner, this is the game you should try.

    4. Final Fantasy XII - This one is the newest in the series. I wasn't the biggest fan of this one because it really had a lot of potiental with great characters that weren't fully used in the story. The gameplay is fun, but very different from others in the series. I guess I would mostly recommend this to fans of Western style RPG's that want to try a Final Fantasy, or someone who cares less about a good story and more about the gameplay elements. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good game and a lot of fun.

    5. Final Fantasy VIII - People seem to either love or hate this one, I think it has a lot to do with coming out right after the mega popular Final Fantasy VII. The biggest differences in this game is that it is set in a modern looking world, and you don't advance simply by leveling, you equip magic to raise your stats. The system is a bit complicated, so I don't recommend this one for someone who hasn't played an FF before. I still enjoy it though, and I think you should eventually play it if you really like the series.

That is just one way to look at the games for someone who has never played the series before. I would also encourage you to play the origanal Final Fantasy which has been remade many times, and all the SuperNintendo games. If you prefer a more chess-like stratigy game, you would probably love the first Final Fantasy Tatics for Playstation.
Hope that helps you out a bit.

    FFVIII looked futuristic to me...>___>...

I started RPG with FF8, and personally liked it to a good deal. Yeah, the system's a little complex but when you get the hang of it you can do awesome crap. (maybe a little "too" awesome, makes you somewhat invincible)

Otherwise Hakumi gives a pretty decent summary for the late FFs.

As a personal rec, I'd definately go for FF7! If you ever manage to find an oppurtunity to grab on it, don't let that chance slip away! It will prolly never come again!
