For the past while now, we've been experiencing a torrent of great movies and TV shows, after a really extended period of somewhat decent but mostly horrible stuff
Like, it feels like every month there's a new show or movie that people are hyping as one of the all time great things that will be remembered when we grow old, and they're pretty much always RIGHT
    It's crazy
And like, even continuations of franchises that people didn't really like, or people were getting sick of seem to be taking a turn for the better
We're in some sort of crazy light age or renaissance, or something
(also we have this blossoming youtube entertainment network, too... seems like this is jsut a good era for entertainment overall... unless your video games)

Hollywood and film franchises are debatable, but Television is indeed something that gets better with age.
I think a lot of the good stuff started coming in around the Late 80s with Cartoons, sitcoms, satirical comedies, and dramas getting better scripts.

Umm... Stuff's always been good. You're starting to understand and seek out quality. It's all on you growing as an individual so be happy about that!

Good movies have been around for as long as I can remember. As for TV shows I definitely noticed a before and an after the nineties. Some smart, unconventional shows popped up on our screens (X-Files and Buffy, to name a few) and all of a sudden american TV shows were everywhere. The craze hasn' t slowed down at all, it' s quite the opposite, my grandma keeps complaining about it. XD

I don' t think TV shows suddenly became better qualitatively per say, we just suddenly got more of them to pick from. A bunch of new technologies made them easier to make and a generation of trope-smart writers made them more surprising.

I've actually been watching lots of old movies from my childhood to feed to my thirst for nostalgia but I agree, I usually never watch tv and only have it plugged in for my consoles but I actually tune into what's on right now and wow minus productivity but plus plus for happiness

Actually thinking the same thing. There has always been good movies/tv, but you just need to look out for it. True, there are a lot of stuff that may look like garbage, and it can turn out to be that way, but it could also turn out to be something more. If you're exclusively seeking out great television shows, of course you're going to believe that there's a surplus of stuff that's good.

And, of course, sometimes it can just be objective.

I'm not talking about there NOT being good stuff before, I'm talking about the sheer number of great things.
Like, I barely make it out to the movies, and I never watch TV, but I've still seen great stuff, and I hear about even more. Breaking Bad, Adventure Time, the Lego Movie, Frozen

We jsut sorta seem like we're in a high point for most entertainment genres
Again, besides video games, which look to be headed towards another crash

There's always been a sheer number of great things too. Like always. At any given time.

    @everyone
no ones saying there's not been a lot of good stuff or that everything has been terrible, but there's undoubtedly been an increase in quality products in recent years to a point where quality products are not the minority

I think there are a lot of factors why this is happening and I think the reason for the relatively recent increase in quality television shows is largely in part due to other providers like Netflix who consistently put out content better than most of what's on television (I don't have Netflix but I hear things like House of Cards are out of this world) which causes an increased need for competition. It all comes down to competition imo. If you notice, all of the big blockbuster movies this year are being sold on their ideas. Watch the trailers for X-Men Days of Future Past, TASpider-Man 2, hell even Transformers is trying it. I think it's great that things are actually having to try now. Yeah, there are still plenty of mindless things out there I'm not saying we're living in a media utopia, but it's obvious that creators are seeing the need to actually... try.
