He walks slowly into the building. He has a grey cap and sunglasses on. His knuckles are deathly white, there is a telltale bulge in his pockets. Why do they let him in? Don’t they see the signs?

He follows the plain smoothly. He walks up to the desk and holds out a single folded piece of paper. The woman behind the desk looks puzzled, not frightened. Doesn’t she understand what is happening?

Her mouth opens, but no sound reaches me. Sound cannot travel through glass and a car door.

Talking was not part of the deal. It was obvious what was going to happen, but none of them could see it.

He keeps his head down as we discussed, and pushes the note towards her somewhat impatiently. Not good.

The woman is still confused. She speaks again. This time she has a concerned, almost motherly look on her face. He hates that look, he always has. But she does not know that. She is a fool.

It could have gone smoothly, with the least trouble to all, but she denied us that luxury. He has no choice.

He shoves the paper towards her. Finally she gets the idea. She bends down and takes it from him. Perhaps he will give her another chance. Perhaps she will merely think him shy.

She slowly opens the note. Her eyes widen even as she reads it. A smile half forms on her face. It is over. She has sealed her fate.

He jumps, head colliding with her skull. She reels back in pain, dazed. He knows what must be done next.

With a grin, he shakes the cap and glasses from his head. The woman stares at his face, still not believing, a non-believer to the end.

His hand leisurely goes to his pocket. An object comes out with a flick. A small gun, the barrel sleek. He never attached the silencer.

A single noise shatters the tension, sensations wash over me. First the tinkle of glass, then the tinny siren’s wail.

He looks around hastily, momentarily stunned. He shakes his head, golden hair flying from side to side; he hurriedly begins his search, patting down the corpse. A wallet comes out. It gets shaken then thrown across the room in frustration.

The counter…

“The counter!”

He hears my voice and his flurrying hands turn to the desk. The woman had left the keys in the till all along. He rips it open, stuffing handfuls of money into his pockets. Not the desired spoils, but under the circumstances, acceptable.

A stairway in the corner of the room, then an elevator. Why weren’t they noticed? We should have noticed them.

He continues stuffing money, oblivious to the threat.

Three men step out of the elevator, two more walk down the stairs. He notices them now. His hands scramble across the floor, loot forgotten. Now they search for his tool.

They find it. He waves it triumphantly. That’s all the excuse the men need.

I see them bring up their weapons, taking aim. He has few advantages left.

My hands work automatically, dancing like his. Like his, they find their goals.

A rumble from below me echoes as the motor starts.

The men’s heads snap around to the source of the noise. More time bought.

The truck leaps towards the building with a mind of its own, my feet under the monster’s control.

The men fire wildly at me. They all miss, or are stopped by the monster. The windscreen shatters into fragments.

The monster screams, then dies as my feet regain control and slam on the breaks. My crippled frame tumbles out of the door as my hand releases a catch.

“We give up! Just don’t shoot him, please!”

There is a glimmer of hope in his eyes, as the men lower their guns slightly. No, not hope. Hate. He hates the way we are giving in.

A second is all he needs. A mind grows forgetful as it grows old. He raises his gun and fires once. At that moment, no one knew where the bullet went. No one cared. They open fired on us. Something hits my back, then another. A sob escapes my throat as his white shirt began to turn red.

He was only a child.

My child…
