So I'm in Biology Honors right now, and the teacher was telling the class about a couple of the forms of experiments and tortures the Nazis would use on Jews during the Holocaust. One of the things he mentioned was that they would experiment on twins to figure out if things affected them differently. One of the students added that they changed their eye color or something like that, and kind of talked among themselves for a few seconds. And they were laughing about it. If that weren't enough, the teacher also mentioned that they would chain a person up, and chop their finger off to see how long it would take for their blood to drain out of their body. They laughed again. I'm sorry, but how thoughtless does someone have to be to laugh about stuff like that? Everytime I heard someone laugh, I felt like asking them how they would feel if someone cut their finger off and left them to die. Really. I know that the kids in this class are all only 14 or 15, but they should be mature enough not to laugh over something such as this.
Oh, so it's better to be grossed out by the dark side of the past for eternity? Feeling nauseous or furious upon hearing it isn't gonna change ****. At least now there are some people who have a laugh about it. What's wrong with people indeed? Clinging to negativity just because it's seen as more "humane"? Well, here's the catch. Gleefully lampooning it and actually doing it are two very different things. What's wrong with people is that the majority of them don't see that.
I remember hearing somewhere that comedy equals tragedy plus time. While not entirely true, it's far easier to laugh about something horrible that happened long ago than it is to actually do it. These kids would probably never be able to eat again if they ever saw it happen, but to them, since it's so long ago, it's more safe. Think how many of them probably play violent games like most first-person shooters, etc, too. They would never act it out, but it's fun to imagine sometimes. Also, I've occasionally thought of inventive ways to torture people, but of course, I would never do it. It was just a mental exercise. tl;dr, just ignore them. They're not laughing seriously (if that makes sense).
You can not cling to negativity and still be respectful about it, there's no need to laugh as there is no need to rage.
Respect is overrated. It doesn't add any happiness to the table because more often than not you take it for granted. You are however disappointed when you think you don't get enough of it. Then of course there's laughter. Sure, you mock the worst chapters mankind has ever written, but at least the jesters have their laughs. I say spend more time in cramming a sense of humor in the young'uns heads. It'll give them more giggles than respect ever will. In short Keep feeling offended: no one wins Laugh about it: joking guys win Yep, it's that simple.
While the majority of your post is horrible, and makes me think those kids need psychological help, the first couple of lines made me laugh. I find it inhumane teenagers who do drugs or drink are judged so terribly (not counting the rest of what you said though, which is pretty wrong) But I do agree with Styx and childofturin to an extent. Yes, those are serious matters, and while the comedy of it is definitely uncalled for, things like that happened so long ago, that it doesn't seem real enough to some people. As Styx said, clinging to negativity isn't the best idea either. Because society is too stuck up on the "inhumanity" of things to actually see any benefit in things (i.e. the death penalty), we suffer. Just like childofturin, I've had thoughts like that, but I'm not going to actually do them. One can't usually help what one thinks about or what one finds comical. Respect to the deceased, in my opinion, has some holes in the idea, I also believe it is deserved. I don't speak ill of the dead (mostly) and I don't laugh about things like the Holocaust, but those things don't directly matter to me. Laughing about it? I think it's wrong. I applaud those "thoughtless" people because they're not held up on a terrible matter. I saw a woman ****ing a horse. It was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen in my life, but I found it pretty hilarious. I'm not a murderer, rapist, or anything of the sort. Have you seen some of the movies out in this decade? Gore is not as horrible as it was before. But yeah, sure, I guess I am psycho. In three words, you actually put my thoughts into the words I couldn't find. This^ Humanity has gotten oversensitive. I don't think it's wrong not to give a damn about some things.
Well, while there are very few to no drug addicts at my school, as it's a magnet school and you actually need to apply and have a gpa of 2.5 to get in, I do understand what you mean. The kids at my school don't talk about things quite as bad, but they're extremely ignorant and they think they rule the world and all that ****. Even at my school, with all Honors classes, no one can ever shut up and listen to someone else for two seconds. People are very self centered, wouldn't you agree? ^this sums up what I think of the matter. I wasn't trying to say people should dwell in the past or some **** like that. That's a really ignorant way to see things, in my view. If you actually care why, ask and I'll explain, but I'm too used to people not giving a **** about anyone else's point of view to explain here. While I agree with the majority of this post, I wouldn't applaud the people who I typed up that first post about in Biology earlier. There are people who can control themselves enough to know not to laugh at such an inappropriate time, while still not letting the matter weigh down their thoughts. I wouldn't call you a psycho for finding that funny(because, sadly, I know of a lot of people who would probably laugh out loud at the thought of that), but it irritates me to think that someone would laugh at such a thing. I've seen a lot of disgusting things as well. I don't see how any of it is funny.
I wouldn't be entirely sure of that. I wouldn't call them addicts, and they may not be hardcore drugs like coke or crack, but I wouldn't doubt that some students there have popped a few pills. Entirely Can you explain anyway?
The mass violence people read about or see everyday makes them near immune to the effects of violents and it becomes part of their day. It's why many people aren't sensitive to this type of subject. I may laugh at the Nazis, but not at their acts against victims. Gang members laugh at someone getting killed by someone from their crew, and cheer, and yelp and encourage them to go on. It makes death and murder a laughable subject.
Please do explain. How else can I make you see that you're wrong? As they should be. Makes them easier to digest. glee of the living > respect to the dead And who's to say that we'd be encouraging violence? I laugh when a skater slips and ends up into a bed of flowers. Doesn't mean I'm gonna mess with his board. You're using exceptions to try and prove the general rule. Tsk tsk.
there was nothing funny to laugh at, it's not like the teacher made a joke about it (at least i HOPE it's safe to assume that). that's why i think they were inappropriate for laughing, it's like saying something like "i went to the movies" and someone laughs and you're like "what the hell was so funny?" anyways, in response to other posts in this thread, i don't think people should become de-sensitized (hope i spelled that right) to violent acts because i really do think that makes it easier to commit those types of acts. i'm not saying we should be dwelling in the past either but we can certainly learn from it. some people say that people are becoming over-sensitive, but what is so wrong with a sensitive world?
