I'm 29 chapters in and so far it seems like it's just Evangelion with neither giant robots nor hedgehogs and an even whinier main character. Am I missing something here?

Not really. As I've told other people, while I enjoyed the anime, the characters and dialogue and story are a lot less well-done than the conflicts, because the action scenes are amazing and anything else is kinda bland.

As someone who criticizes a lot of things *coughswordartonlinecoughcough*, I find Titan very much worth the hype it has (granted, I have only watched the anime). The conflicts are really fun, and I rather like how the characters are done. They start as generic archetypes, but they do change over time. Of course, the animation is the show's strongest point. It's a fun action series that plays with a lot of shonen tropes, but also goes away from the norm and comfortable to try something different, unlike other shonen series.

I don't like it as much as most of the people I know but the first opening was awesome.

Whiny teenager fights giant monsters while the government is obviously planning something involving the giant monsters that everybody is somehow oblivious to. Other, less whiny teenagers with other serious psychological problems also fight the monsters.

Reluctant heroes fighting monsters has been a trope in anime since the 60's, hell it's literally the basis for every mech show ever.
I'm not even gonna comment on the evil government up to something behind the scenes thing, it's like you've never watch a Saturday Morning Cartoon.
In fact you've just ALMOST described the Krang arc of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
And what do you mean by psychological problems? Everyone seems like pretty standard anime/manga characters to me. Excited guy, nervous guy, jerk guy, mysterious girl, quirky girl, the works.

And I don't even see how Eren is "whiny".

I LOVE SIMPLISTIC BROAD GENERALIZATIONS! THEY'RE SO WHACKY! :D
Eren isn't a reluctant hero, he specifically joined to fight the Titans. Why? Because HUMANITY F*** YEAH!! Also his mom is bitten in half in front of him but the HFY part was there first.

Also, sending teenagers to fight monsters that literally eat people, sometimes watching close friends being killed brutally tends to mess with people's heads. Happens in real life, though without the man eating monsters.

Yeah, not whiny. Angry as all hell but not really whiny.

I know he's not a reluctant hero but I assumed that's what OP meant when he said "whiny" so I was just clarifying .

I don't find Eren anywhere near as whiny as Shinji personally...? Or at least not in the same way. Eren gets dangerously, murderously angry where Shinji usually gets more upset/scared. I realized after writing this that I have been ninja'd a few times over about it so I'm just going to leave it as a +1

Anyway I feel it's mostly average personally, but it can also be pretty addicting imo (incessant cliffhangers, lots of mysteries). If you're just reading the manga, I think you'd do well to give the anime a shot, as I really think it better showcases the series' action, which is a huge thing it's got going for it. I really think AoT is a lot better in motion.

Shingeki no Kyojin's shining point is the adrenaline factor and the cliffhangers. It's hard to get this when you're reading which is why it suddenly became popular after the anime.
