Like the title says. There have been a lot of games that have been praised to death by critics, some deserving of the praise, but others...not so much. So what game have gotten really good reviews, but yet, you couldn't figure out why? Me, I never saw the appeal of Bioshock. I thought it was really boring and repetitive. I mean, the story was amazing, and one of the coolest in a video game, but it was underused, and I didn't feel the immersion like I did in Fallout 3, or Half Life 2. I hated the art style as well. I also didn't like God of War III, for some reason, I just didn't like it. I was a huge fan of I and II, but I just didn't like the third. The ending was stupid and rushed, the final battle wasn't fun, or satisfying at all. It's a good thing I rented it.
The only one that I've been disappointed with thus far is Dynasty Warriors 6. It's just downright terrible. To me, it seems that the developers did a rush job on it.
Half-Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, L.A. Noire and World of Warcraft. I was told by friends to try them or that they are meant to be really good, but I found them all terribly boring, too easy or the same as something I already have (and can get cheaper).
Metal Gear Solid 4, most hyped up game ever. i didn't really see why people worshiped it to death. it was ok, but didn't really live up to the hype. God of War 3. i felt the gameplay was too repetitive. i don't really feel too much has changed from the games that preceded it and that wasn't good because it just felt old. plus, Kratos isn't exactly a likeable character (and he probably wasn't meant to be) Final Fantasy XIII. the game was too linear, the battles were boring because of the auto-battling option. one thing i really disliked about this game was that most of the boss battles are won with pre-battle preparation rather than strategy in battle. it seems as though setting the right paradigms were more important than what you actually did in battle, but that leads me to another point, why not just let us change the paradigm of ONE character at a time instead of making the whole party change? the way it is now just seems like a hassle because it HAS to be set up correclty to work right. and this last game isn't really hyped up but was very disappointing which is Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded. i'm wondering how this got above a 7 (which is still generous) in multiple sites. this is probably the ONLY game in the series that isn't even worth playing, let alone buying. i would say it's not even worth it for people to pirate and play for free.
i dunno if they were famous, but some of the newer sonic games like Secret rings, Sonic Rivals, Sonic and the Black Knight and others i dare not mention. the classics, don't taint the classics, Sega!!!
I can usually tell if I'm going to like/dislike a game, so it doesn't happen often. But I do remember reading that Golden Sun was supposed to be good, so I tried it out. It's not. I would like tos trangle whoever wrote the "plot" for that mess of a snorefest.
I agree with you there. I understand they wanted to do something different, but goodness. They threw away the whole attack concept they had for the past 10 or so games. They then cut down on how many characters could go through Musou mode. And for what? More disc space? More space for cutscenes? I prefer my old Dynasty Warriors 4 with all the characters available in Musou and the generic cutscenes they gave us.
I really try to not bash games, but I've just expirenced a few "technical difficulties" with Fallout: New Vegas, suprisingly it's my first Fallout game.
Dragon Age 2. I know it does not even have the greatest reviews and stuff but still. I was so disappointed with this game, maybe because I was just so excited for it since DA:O and I actually preordered the damn thing since they had 'extra' stuff and the extra stuff was not even worth it. This is the first game I have not touched since my first and last playthrough, I want to love it but it just feels so unfinished and rushed. Not to mention the whole bisexual romance thing feels stapled on and cheap. Also, Bioware said that Kirkwall was to be 'full with life', but it just feels creepy that you are battling in the streets and people just don't care. Characters were all very dumb too, the game completely ruined what was left of Anders. Not to mention it was the worst ending I have ever seen, there are cliff hangers and there are 'just dangling an actually exciting plot in front of the poor fans heads' endings. It is decent but don't waste 60 bucks on it like I did. Also, Persona 4. I like it and it is a very good game. But the story and characters are just not as good as P3. All of the characters were kind of annoying and stupid (it took them so long to get that the killer targeted whoever appeared on TV). Maybe it kind of makes sense since they have no professional group like SEES but they just seemed dumb. Other than the plot and characters the combat has improved.
Mine was FFXIII. Like Evilman has said, the game is too linear, and the battles don't offer enough diversity in my opinion. Some of the bosses require too many hours of grinding and the crystarium can only go so far to help you.
^ This ^ I was getting really hyped up for Dragon Age II but after a couple of playthroughs (I still dunno how I got that many) I realized that it wasn't as great as some people were making it out to be. The bugs and glitches were annoying as hell too. The story also confused the heck out of me, especially since something completely different happened in my imported save. I was not impressed by the exact same maps being used for every area, the only difference being that there might be a bird or table sitting in a corner to indicate GUISE IT'S A DIFFERENT AREA. I still get insulted when people say that it was better than Origins and I am glad that I downloaded it instead of pre-ordering it like I was originally planning too. Final Fantasy XIII was also another game that left me thoroughly disappointed, story was meh and the battle system almost made me cry from disappointment too, also the fact that Lightning was basically a clone of Cloud Strife. The only thing I liked about the game was that it was colourful.
I rented Iron Man for PS2. The controls sucked. The animation as well. Then I realized it was developed by Sega. Nuff said.
Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded: a good game but I haven't really been motivated to finish it. I suppose it's not majorly popular like some of the other games but I thought I'd count it. Left 4 Dead: Everyone was claiming "It's better than the second one!" so I went on it and I got bored very quickly, I preferred the variety the second game had to offer. Plus I prefer the survivors. I feel that maybe people who had become attached to the first group of survivors would feel sad to have them replaced but that wasn't me. Fallout: This could be because I played in on a PS3 and I find FPS very hard to aim with using a PS3 controller which meant I was basically dead O.o Although, I didn't much enjoy the gameplay aspect of it much either.
Call of Duty MW2:There was so much wrong with this game it isn't even funny. I was pretty good at it but even then it wasn't fair because the lag was always terrible and usually you will never hear me say this but hacking it sucked. I hated when people came into a game playing unfair but I also hacked it myself and it was so stupid. I mean yeah we get every gun in the game and can jump high. It was total trash and so was the coding that made up the game. I mean anyone who knew C# could easily make a patch and change everything.
Recent Call of Duty Games (Modern Warfare all the way up to Black Ops). It is one of those mainstream games where I really don't get why it's such a popular place to place. I find the platform shooters much more exciting really. Black Ops is probably the top of the list where everything seemed very recycled, very unpolished, as if the game was only meant for profit. Dead Space. I have to admit that it Dead Space was not a terrible game. But when people told me it is really going to scare where you're not going to want to finish this for an hour or so straight, then that's when I felt the horror factor truly didn't live up to my expectations.
As weird as it sounds BBS disappointed me a little. its my second favorite game but i guess my hype for the game had grown so much from the time i found out about way back when on the site till the time i got it last september that no amount of awesomeness could have sufficed for the hype.
^ Can't think of any other at the moment. I'm just a bit disappointed Atlus didn't make it better on P4 than in P3/FES. P3 succeeded on making me obsessed to it to the point I played it to more than three hundred hours of total playtime, but P4, while the variation of the dungeons is better, the other thing is just.. nnn.
I must quote since I can't think of anything else. I play them at my friend's, and their really going downhill.
