    I love how people ostensibly think in threads like this that they'll be the star of their chosen game, whereas most of us would be lucky to be the shopkeep.

    In light of that, I'd go with either Final Fantasy IX or Disgaea. In IX there's always something to do, and regardless of where you end up the casual everyman can reasonably find some excitement; and in Disgaea, death is (almost literally) a plaything.
