NOTE: This is not "What is your favorite Pokémon game?". I want to know which game you think is objectively the best. Please explain your answer if you vote!

do you consider remakes to be the same as the originals?
i think hoenn is objectively the best region with the best designs and best characters. oras is a pretty great game but so is emerald. i would probably go with Emerald because it's leaps and bounds better than rs and as much as I love oras, it does feel lacking compared to emerald and makes up for it in superficial ways. Following that would be Platinum. It's such an expansive game. With a story that works almost just as well as Hoenn's.

I'm in the same dilemma as Below with regards to GSC and HGSS. I love Johto a ton, and really love the additions the remakes added, but there's just a certain charm to the originals' 8-bit simplicity that makes me go with them.

ORAS and BW are also really great too. The entire plot of BW and the Delta Episode are some of the best writing of the game franchise to me.

Crystal was the best in many ways (and I think it should be together with Gold/silver). It has the best generation evolution until Black2/white2-> XY, the other generations have few changes between the previous and the next . The second generation not only had 2 maps (that none game has had since, minus their remake), day/night time (that were dropped and then salvaged in future generations), cool story (the first gen is basically win the league) , expanded the mythos, gave us the RUINS OF ALPH to explore daily events (friday? Wanna catch a Lapras?) gender option, RADIO, cell phone -that was a minor inconvenience when you were bothered for gossip, but was cool for Rematch people that keeping getting better, itens (evolution stones!)- Quests where you received lended pokemons that you could trade for some random pokemon and just equip the mail or such!
More chance of catching Suicune, the mascot of the game was for the first time the legendary semi exclusive, and not your inicial.
COLORS! Cool pokemon, Shiny pokemon, EGGS (game changer), equipped items, berries (that were fun , not the sad ones we have now).
It was the first in many things and I feel like some generations settle for the least inovation possible, some like the third even go into the trouble of taking things that we got on this gen.

As a whole I would say Emerald would probably have to be the best, since it was the first that had you take an active part against an organization rather than you just running into them coincidentally all the time, and it had them take an active role in the game too, with both teams, instead of RS/ORAS where you had both teams but somehow one of them was good and the other bad. With Emerald you had both teams doing stuff and one of them wasn't just shoved to the side. ORAS did do nice making a scenario like the Delta Episode, but playing through the story just feels lackluster again without you dealing with the consequences of both teams.

Platinum was pretty good too, with Cyrus as the villain and the way he saw humanity and tried to build a new universe and his God-complex, which interestingly actually was fulfilled in the anime, though I'm sure he's only alive because it's a kids show and normally he would die the moment he entered the new universe since he would still be in space.

Gold/Silver/Crystal not being grouped is kind of meh, that aside I'd probably have to go with Gold/Silver. I've played every single pokemon game to completion and back (implying I've replayed them many times) with the exception of Black/White (including 2 for both). Those games didn't really seem to interest me at all.

That aside the Gen 2 game I had was gold, and this was before I did any sort of emulation, so I just played what I could get my hands on. Despite the many competitive improvements over the years, Gold remains the most fun in my eyes. I am not saying it is the perfect pokemon game, but in terms of what I would call my favorite, there is no contest. When the battery for my Gold version died I was crushed. Out of all the potential scenarios of that happening to the other versions (hypothetically, of course) I wouldn't be as upset.
