Well, like the title says, what do you consider, or have always had in mind when thinking of someone intelligent, intelligent?

Wiktionary has three definitions for it:

    1. "Of high or especially quick cognitive capacity, bright."
    2. "Well thought-out, well considered"
    3. "Characterized by thoughtful interaction."

The word intelligent is tossed around a bit, people think of intelligent as being smart. Just because you aren't smart doesn't mean your not intelligent. Intelligent means you are mostly smart in all things, or you are smart in one particular subject. For example if you are a excellent student in math you will know the PI is not just 3.14, but 3.14..... with numbers on and on until the earth crashes into the sun. If you are excellent student in English you will know good grammar. just because you aren't bright in all your subjects doesn't mean you not intelligent.

I would say that it means cognitive processes and thinking patterns. I would not just say it refers to 'book smarts' because someone can be an A student by memorizing things easy enough and yet be so street dumb it's pathetic. I think common sense, rationalizing things out and learning from mistakes to acquire wisdom would be 'intelligent' to me. Also, adaptability.

Actually, as Repliku said, intelligence isn't if you're smart or not. Intelligence is the ability to make desicions and apply reason.
Take AIs, for example. Artificial intelligence bots aren't nessicarily 'smart', but they don't purposely walk off, say, a cliff.
Desicision - Not to go over the cliff
Reasoning - Will end up as a heap of broken metal at the bottom

Given that a human generally wouldn't do the same (a mentally stable human, at least), does that mean that we're no smarter than a hunk of metal on wheels?
    I'd hope not.

Well I think there are multiple things that make someone "smart"

Memory. The ability to learn and memorize things.

Talent. The ability to preform a certain academic subject at a high quality with little effort required.

Quick wittedness. The ability to think on your feet, and process information swiftly and converse it with little trouble.

    Make sense?

    Makes sense to me, Pika_power.

I always viewed intelligence as a method to work things out logically and in common sense. Some view intelligence being smart and with some sterotypical people I know, it just means being bright. It irritates me for some reason when someone does amazingly well in a particular subject/s and my peers confuse the term 'intelligence' and 'nerd'.

I think intelligent people are those highly opinionated. People who have strong and decent information to back up their views. Intelligence to me is anyone who can speak their mind while still bringing up valid points.

I don't think intelligence it limited to humans, though.

I've seen animals act quite intelligently. Like dolphins. During a some scenerio, there were two buttons in the tank. One, when pressed, gave the dolphin a fish, and the other did nothing.
After several tries, the dolphin would use deductive reasoning to realize that the first button gave it food. After that, the dolphin would always go for the button that gave fish.

And what about Koko, the gorilla that learned sign language and mourned the death of her pet cat?
That can't be pushed off as a "only-happened-once" sort of thing.

I would have to say that, In my defonition, an intelligent person is someone who can silence people by just using words not curseing, just words. For example:

Person 1. At Junior High, they flush your head down the Toilet if you're a freshman, wanna practice.

Person 2. The toilet's never had anything as disgusting as your head put down it, It might be sick.

    Person 1. ... touché.

Person 2 would be the intelligent one.

But see, clawtooth...an intelligent person would never get into that sort of situation.

I'd say Person 2 is a cynical b*stard, actually. Not intelligent.
Intelligence is not the ability to throw insults around; otherwise the whole population would be intelligent.
And that, sadly, is not the case.

  12. That's actually from Harry Potter, isn't it? xD Dudley and Harry. I just cracked up since someone just called Harry a cynical ba*tard xDD.

But moving to the question, I pretty much agree with Repliku. I don't think intelligence requires you to only be book smart, get excellent grades, because there are many forms to it. Anyone who can scheme and manipulate are definitely intelligent on planning ahead, and make their own conclusion by going with people's emotions, in some manner. A street wise person can also be considered intelligent due to his knowledge, ifs and donts, and what not. Alos someone with experience can be intelligent, because that is a sign of wisdom, which I consider to be smart in the emotional or spiritual sense, if you get me.

Shouldn't this go in the Intelligent Discussion board? xP

Intelligence is the ability to think rationally even in the most hopeless of situations, being able to understand and be aware of something quickly, or just having some common sense.

Being good in school doesn't essentially mean that you're intelligent, just that you're brain can process information and remember things easily. It's a sign of intelligence, but not an absolute. For example, you can get a C in Science while another person gets an A, but that doesn't mean that the other person's smarter than you. There are many different forms of intelligence that vary for each person.

Ah...RikuRules, this is the Intelligent discussion place. And what you said...not very intelligent.
    And Clawtooth, don't spam.

    Anyway.
To be intelligent, the being we're talking about has to be able to reason. Without reason, it wouldn't be able to come to the right conclusions, and that's why we think it's "smart".

    Quite unlike you... j/k xD

In my opinion, Intelligence can be smartness, quick-wittedness, good lateral thinking, creativity, or basically anything that uses the mind to solve problems, whether it be everyday problems, mathematics at shchool, or even finding a way to get your family out of a burning home.

That post was the opposite of intelligent.

    -------

Intelligence has to do with maturity, they go hand in hand. If you are not mature, but you are intelligent, you cant use your intelligence to the best of its ability. So, to be intelligent, you have to be mature. Also, to be intelligent, you have to be smart, as in, knowledged about many various things.

A person can be intelligent in some things more than others, like myself, I know a helluva lot about math, computers, golf, hockey, Dungeons And Dragons, chemistry, and many others. But I know sh!t about things like cricket, anything on the PS3, drawing, and others.

Anyone who can outsmart me is considered really intelligent, since I know I'm just intelligent.
