Yeah, the Quantum episodes are on Netflix, so you should watch them, if not just because it's only 3 episodes. There's also the .hack//Liminality, but that was also a little strange. I mean, it was interesting that they didn't bother at all with the game world, and showed what happened in the real world during each of the 4 games of the original series, but meh, still not the greatest.

And I definitely get what you mean by the animation in ROOTS. It's brighter than you would think it for being, especially because of the whole setting and plot of the game, and even the dark parts they didn't get right. In fact, I think they only managed to slightly get Haseo's crazy moments after Shino got axed, because even though he was all about her, something about it didn't seem right. In fact, the only reason Haseo kept going after her was more like she seemed like an older sister or something, not even a romance interest. And even that seemed forced. The way they did it in the game was good because we saw him deal with other stuff instead of just spouting "Shino!!" over and over. And the animation certainly seemed a lot more flat.

    Go get some tacos?

There's a lot more anime out there that's a lot better than SAO. I don't really get all the hype over the show in the first place, I didn't think it was all that great personally. Maybe try looking up any anime that's been made/released within the last couple years. I'm sure you'll find something comparable, if not better.

    SAO has that?

Attack on Titan has been ruined for me by the massive amounts of stuff I get about it on tumblr. I like know the whole show now.

That's what you get for going on tumblr. You should always expect spoilers. I have a friend who ended up finding out info about Once Upon A Time before she saw the episodes and she just stopped watching....Speaking of which, I need to continue and catch up

Okay, I'll be fair here. SAO had some really great animation sequences, they always had you at the edge of your seat. The music was also fantastic; I was willing to give up some cash to buy the first opening on iTunes. All that being said, SAO's biggest weakness is its story. It had a great premise, but went nowhere with it. It was very cliched, most of the time, you could guess how things turned out, and Kirito and Asuna are so flatly written, they make Rooney Mara look busty.

Technically, I like SAO. It has a lot of good things going for it. I can even say that some of the characters were good (to me, the most well written character was Suguha). Again I say technically because they are very lacking in what I want out of a show that is of this quality: a good plot. The plot for SAO is just a mess. I'm not looking for a masterpiece of anime, I just want something that is consistent and isn't pandering to generic otaku fandom (which it did).

At least SnK isn't overly hyped. So I respect that fandom.

I think the weak story is tied with the equally weak characters. As you said, the best-written character was Suguha, but largely in part to the rest of the cast she's compared to being so cardboard-cutout generic or unlikable. Kirito's gotta be one of the most bland protagonists I've seen in anime.

Yes, I definitely agree with that, but I think that's also think that blandness is why it is so popular. It's like why girls like Twilight even though Bella is a bland character. Because Kirito is bland, it's that much easier for someone to insert themselves as a main character, especially if they are very young. Personally, I can't stand these characters, but that's something you have to deal with when it comes to most shonen anime.

So why does this series get so much praise? If the characters are as bland as you're saying, particularly the protagonist, there's no way it's anything more than mediocre.

Then they'll love the Fate series! It's got hot chicks, it's got swords, it's got Lancer suffering, we got gas, we got toothbrushes, we got people pump your gas for you!

Oh, and it's awesome. But who'd want to watch something for awesome? :\

Tummer's point about self insertion being vety easy is the best explanation. There's also the fact that it spread like wildfire in places like Tumblr as well, which only likely eased the rise to popularity even more.

I liked it mostly because it was a way to see how people might react if they were to get stuck inside of a game and what might happened afterwards. Not too mention, I could personally relate to the Kirito character quite a bit, and while you guys say the characters are bland, you have to realize there's worse out there, and not everything has to be Shakespeare quality.

Yes, there are worse, but it doesn't mean they don't have try try because of that fact. And I even stated before that I don't expect high art when I go into something, but I do expect it to have something to make it differen. It does that with the animation, but the story and characters are too generic.

Think of it like this, there is a reason why Ender's Game is going to be a classic film while Pacific Rim will be forgotten in about a year, even though they have a lot of the same genre elements. SAO is fun, no question, but nothing about the way it's told is special.

i'll restate my opinion, SAO had kissing (and not just any kissing, anime kissing), therefore, it was good.

    Case closed.

Everyone out. This is my domain.
