Vivid Green acts as if SAO was the greatest thing ever. Even subbed I find the show rather dull. There are bad memories connected to it for me now too, so I may be biased, but imo the show was never that good.

Well excuuuuuuse me for having my own opinion on a good show. It's hard to find a lot of shows that had good story, animation, and music like SAO did...or does...or whatever.

Eden of the East is at least three levels above Sword Art Online and it's not a crappy adaptation of something good, so there's that.

Also remember that I suggested reading Fine Structure.

Actually, I tried watching that, and I managed to get a few episodes in, but each episode was really dull and boring, so I decided to just stop watching it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Dot Hack. In fact, I think I've seen all but the .hack//SIGN anime, but I'm not counting the .hack/TRILOGY film. Although I should see where a good place to watch that is. My point is though, I'm sure it gets better, but watching through all that drama is something I have a difficult time with, for anything, whether it be a book, game, or show, and I just do not want to deal with it.

Have you watched any recent anime's like Kill La Kill or Attack on Titan, if not watch them
they're both ten times better than the crap that is SAO

Why not just read episode summaries, then? It's less work than watching the episode and you won't be lost when you get to a point where you can start watching again. Speaking of reading, why not read Fine Structure? I get the feeling that it's the kind of thing you'll really like!

It does get better, but it's not a fundamentally action-driven show. It's not supposed to be. It's more of a character study.
The idea is that most of the characters are having troubles in their real lives, and use the game as a means of escape. Over the course of the show we find out what the problems are and see their attempts to work through them.
I love .hack but in my honest opinion the rest of the series never reached SIGN's depth (relatively speaking); nowhere close. In fact post-SIGN I thought it devolved into much more basic melodrama, which can be fun in its own right to be fair (I enjoyed G.U.). SIGN is more slow and understated which helps me swallow the sort of ridiculous concept, although I still struggle with suspension of disbelief in it somewhat lol (no one talks like that in an online game!). I'm not saying it's perfect, or for everyone, I just find it better than the rest of the series personally hah.

The TRILOGY film is mostly good for eye candy and not much else as I recall haha, maybe that's just me though. I love the visual style in G.U. a lot, it's gorgeous. I absolutely despised .hack//ROOTS however, except the music. That's not 100% relevant I just had to throw it out there because I really hate ROOTS.

Anyway I guess my point is that I get if slow character studies aren't your thing, but even if you have to skip the expository episodes I feel it's worth trying again. No pressure though. Just my two cents. SIGN really made an impact on me when I saw it when I was younger, so my love for it could also be partially nostalgia.

I actually wasn't a fan of ROOTS either, kinda funny since i love the G.U. games, but it just kinda took a weird way to show what happened during the 6 month time skip. And I really couldn't get myself to care much for the Shino character either. I just watched it to see what they had tried to do. It actually was hard to even watch ROOTS. The ones I liked most were Legend of the Twilight and Quantum. Although LotT took a way different route than the manga, though I found it amusing nonetheless, and Quantum....well, for 3 episodes, it got confusing fast.

Along with the .hack recommendations in the thread, you might enjoy

    x

Which I personally feel plays out the concept of being stuck in a game more amusingly and well-written than SAO. But if you preferred the show more for its character interactions and the like, there is a slew of character-driven shows you can check out that I feel also personally do things better than SAO. SAO was quite alright. I enjoyed season one but season two did not sit that well with me. It was something one could watch in fun, but I would not call it absolutely astounding or put it on my personal standards of excellence in anime. The scenario did prompt a flood of fifty thousand Kiritos around worldwide conventions however, so more than anything it is just the average sort of show whose qualities make it endearing to a majority of people.

I've not seen Quantum yet (I think it's on Netflix though soo I should get on that...) and wasn't a huge fan of LotT to be honest hah. But yeah, I'm with you 100% on ROOTS. I love G.U., but it was plain hard to watch for me.

Not being able to care about Shino is just one example to me of a big problem with the whole thing: the characters were mostly poorly developed and/or unmemorable :v. I liked Phyllo, and that was about it.
I also felt like Haseo and Shino's relationship was nowhere near developed enough for him to fly off the deep end when she went comatose. It felt like a huge overreaction considering he barely knew her. And that severely damages the foundation of the entire show.

The whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way and was topped off with inconsistent, awkward animation imo. The colors are more crisp than SIGN, but SIGN is decidedly more fluid and on-model.
