Someone would have had a bag, a book, or something of that kind. Anything would work as a club.

 

Ah, I assumed it had happened on a platform at the train station, not on the actual train.

 

When he metioned train conductors, I presumed that he was on the train as a result. Besides, if they're fit and know the area well enough, the attackers could scatter pretty quick and not be caught. Unless the coppers were there and then the chances are they wouldn't catch them at all. SO it would probably piss them off more than help the situation. Only from what i've noticed on the Underground anyway.
