If I can make an attempt to translate the Psychology talk into laymen's terms:

REM sleep, or 'Rapid Eye Movement' is a deep state of sleep where dreams most often happen. It is the most rejuvenating state of sleep.

As to the sleep paralisys, it's like your brain is awake but your body isn't. It's very alarming, it's happened a few times to me as well. But give it a few moments and it'll be over. Sort of like your body hit the snooze button on its alarm clock and your brain is ready to go.

I study psychology as well and some of it is very interesting.

Yeah, that happened to me about three times. I was lying in my bed, and I woke up and I tried to move but I couldn't, and I tried to call my mom but I couldn't even speak! I was freaked out!!!!!

Something kinda like this has happened to me a few times, only I'll be awake, then just when I'm about to fall asleep, suddenly I feel like I'm falling and my body just kind of automatically jolts awake. It's very strange a annoying.

I believe I once saw a documentary film on this, and those superstitions were mentioned in said movie. In Japanese culture the character is thought to be either an old woman, who proceeds to choke you in the night, or a young girl. Young girl being often associated with Yamamura Sadako and other generic portrayals of onryo yurei.

yeah, exept i feel more like i was falling and when i jerk up by myself it is when i somehow land safely... and same thing as darky says; You move again when you're about to lose your breath and pass out.

Exept for me, it feels like I'm holding my breath underwater for too long...
strange... mine sounds like the KH intro...

    but it's damn scary...
maybe the way i explained it made it sound KH-ey

falling dreams are caused by the same thing, waking up and your brain cant control your muscles so you feel like your falling for an instant then the feeling comes back, suppose its just a milder form of full blown paralysis.
