So, I'm thinking about starting a Vinyl/CD collection. Vinyls look freaking sick, but I dunno if they're worth it compared to CDs and stuff. What do you guys think? Any vinyl aficionados out there to put in their 2 cents?
Vinyls for your favourite albums, or maybe buy both? The thing about CDs is that you can easily rip them onto your computer.
Vinyls can run you more money but some they do give a slightly different kind of sound. Like modern vinyl, not classic records, can get better sound than some CD recordings according to some people. You really can't always hear it though. CDs have the advantage that while still remaining superior to MP3 and other lossy file formats they can be ripped for their audio files and thus be more reliable and maintain more plays. So they're both high sound quality formats if you get the right stuff but one looks nice and is a talking point and the other has more portability and utility.
Well, yeah, ripping an album onto my computer is no worry for me, since I can just find the download or torrent for it anywhere. I just want something physical to collect.
Show me up, why don't you? Not always. If you're an audiophile or you use what.cd, for instance, you could upload those albums in high quality. Look for albums people want and so on, gives you download points to get FLACs. Contribute to the community.
Well, yeah, it's the better sound quality that really is the selling point to me for vinyls, and plus just the whole novelty of it, since it really just isn't too common anymore. Also, apparently, people with vinyls say that it sounds like their playing the music live right in front of you. Eh, sound quality isn't THAT important to me. Ironically, I even listen to some lo-fi bands and albums, so, it isn't a big deal for me.
If you play it at a live venue shaped area, maybe. Live music's sound it shaped by so many things that a recording can never really capture since each performance depends on the crowd's reaction, the venue, how they feel like playing it that day and all that other stuff. But if you've got money to burn and you want a novelty item, then vinyl has more value than CDs in that category for sure.
Placebo affect in a way there, but I've felt that way too, so maybe there is some truth to it. I must have all of my music in at least 320kbps. I only settle for less if hours of searching turns up nothing better.
Well, yeah, of course, but I meant in the sense that it sounds so rich and vivid that it sounds like they could be playing live That's understandable. Btw, do you guys know if a record player that plays 12" vinyls can also play 7" vinyls?
The only vinyls that I own are an original release of the Star Wars Original Soundtrack. My uncle gave them to me a few years ago. I love the hell out of them.
I feel like they should be able to on principle but I'm pretty sure it's actually based on the model. I've got basically no experience with anything of that nature made after 1975 though, so don't take my word for it.
I think so. Doesn't it start at the outer edge and work its way in? It shouldn't matter so long as it fits on the tray. But maybe I don't understand record players. It's been well over ten years.
get vinyl unless the cd comes with cool packaging/extra stuff. idk vinyls are like art in and of themselves. cd's are just...bulky.
That's how it begins. Pretty soon, you'll give in to your newfound power and perform an Orwellian Edit.
I get CDs because I have nothing to play a fucking vinyl on, though I'd love to collect them. Also they're fucking expensive. If you want someone to talk to about this though hit up Austin/Renegade. He's quite the music enthusiast and I'm pretty sure he's been collecting vinyls for a few years.
