I just got this thought. Kingdom Hearts 2 was darker than the original in which the enemies became colder, Sora had darker clothes and you had many more elements of fear and sadness in it.

Now take into fact other popular games:

    KH = KH2
    Jak and Daxter = Jak2
Prince of Persia = Prince of Persia 2
God of War = God of War (might be harder to see how much darker but it is)
    etc...

    Do you believe this?

Actually, yes, that seems to be the case when you mention it. I definatly noticed the difference between KH and KH2, as well as a bunch of other games. I think they might do it to make it more intresting, but sometimes they also might not mean to do it.

Well of course they are becoming darker. It is what the people demand. We all want to see more violence and we want kickass characters to kick arse. We want to see what it is like to have this dark power and reign chaos on the world while not getting in trouble. Videogames are bound to get darker and darker as time passes. Plus it make the last boss fight totally awesome.

I've noticed this as well. I like it, to be honest, because I'm more into darker things. :'D

Ya but prequels are always darker because it delves deep into the past e.g; Birth by Sleep.

Yeah always, FFX-2 was 20 times darker then FFX! [/sarcasm]

But yeah, for the most part it's true...

well, the reason these games could be growing darker is because a lot of the game makers try to make the games grow as the audience grows older, and many people just like the idea of darkness etc, and its true, darker games also have more violence, another good attraction for gamers

That actually does make sense. Sequels are meant to be darker, not just sequels to Kh2, but sequels to other games like Tekken 5,Soulcalibur III and such.
I still enjoy playing sequels though, they are pretty epic.

Some sequels are darker, Majora's Mask compared to Ocarina of Time, for example. It makes them more enjoyable, because the plot is usually more in depth.

I think this makes sense. Usually in sequels, either the plot lines get more intricate, or the creators want it to be bigger and better, both of which usually have the same result, they are darker.

That's what I think, at least.

I wouldn't say that KH2 was darker than KH, felt completely the same to me. Though the Jak and Daxter series was a good example. Guns, cursing, post-apocolyptic surroundings was a huge mile away from the first.

Ratchet 2 wasn't darker >_> did you see what the final boss was?

A giant fuzzy blue fluff ball

It was hardly darker >_> not to mention the fact that the basic plot line of the first game was much darker what with the whole

Global issues such as pollution and over population (lol earth anyone?) causing a planet to be destroyed which led to a plan to like destroy other places in a selfish attempt to create somewhere new to **** up with no regard for anyone else.

Whereas in the games that followed the plot lines were so not darker. Ok possibly in the third some might argue but I would disagree. As for Gladiator, it was hardly omg so much darker D: in fact Gladiator kind of pissed me off with the plot (or lack thereof).

Anyone I'm going off on a tangent. My point is, for every game that you can say this idea applies to, there is another game that can counter it.

Video Game sequels are far from always being darker.

CtR is right. Video game sequels are far from always being darker.

Most of the time, the sequel of a successful series is only made darker because they are trying to appeal to a older audience. A kid who played the previous one, say 3 years ago, is obviously going to have a different way of thinking and logic. The company has to ensure it can appeal to an older audience because you would normally play the first game before moving on to the second one. KH II, I suppose, isn't a great example of being darker and complex storyline. I very much doubt they would allow the killing of loveable Disney characters or an actual explanation why character don't seem to bleed when attacked (for example, Sora. How many times have you been stabbed/burned/fried and so on in a fight?). I guess it mostly comes down to the person who plays the game if they pick things up and regard them as dark. When my sister played KH II, she disregarded the fact that the Organization was trying to become whole again and saw them as 'the bad guys'. Whereas I sympathized them and thought: is Sora justified into killing these people who just want happiness?

In games such as RE or GOW, they have already established the tone of darkness and violence. The games are meant to target an older audience who won't go running around with a gun and are of stable mind. That doesn't neccesarily mean that all the people who play are of stable mind but I digress.

thats why i love the sequels see when they make the first game after they release it they go over and look what they can change and make better if they make a part2 by kh going into darker clothes and stuff makes it look cooler and yes i did notice that god of war 2 got way darker i mean he was ripping off wings i dont remeber that in part 1 and then he flyed with the wings so much better my point is part 2 is always better in video games EDIT: and yes jak got darker at part 2 i mean he got older and part 2 and 3 of jak and daxter was the best so another point of my most sequels are better.

im sure this is more common than not, just as im also sure there are sequals that are lighter.....off the top of my head, (even though its not out yet, it seems this way) gears 2 looks lighter....
