I'm sure all of us know the concept of "vegetarianism", which has quite obviously gained popularity over the recent years. In its basic sense, it is simply a diet that excludes the consumption of meat.

I want your opinions on this. Do you think it would be psychologically and physically improper to be a vegetarian, perhaps due to the health effects of not consuming meat or for reasons otherwise? Or would you think it would be fine, as vegetarians still receive all the protein they need without the consumption of meat due to nuts, cheese, etc., among other proper reasons for being a vegetarian to be justified?

Some of the smartest and fittest people that I know are vegetarians, so no. I don't. Sure they have to eat more, but they are getting just as much energy and nutrition as everyone else.

It's not that bad, being one. Its hard at first, then it gets easier as the years go. Soy and other food items make it easier to get protein, and taking vitamins is good too. Honestly, soy milk is really good. I think either being a vegetarian or not being one can work eitherway, depending on your lifestyle.

You can live a perfectly healthy life without meat. There are other things, besides meat, that can give you the protein you need.

We wouldn't have the teeth we do if we were meant naturally to not eat meat (awkward phrasing FTW). If it were adaptive to go veg, we would have the teeth of a cow (or something close). We do not. We have the teeth of omnivores. Therefore, according to natural evolution, we are meant to eat meat as well. Besides, meat is sooo tasty!

Sure, I mean, culturally, if you really want to eat vegetarian, then fine. You're just missing out on meat.

but in all seriousness, I think it's perfectly fine. It's possible to get the necessary nutrients from other foods. And there's even less possibility of getting sick from under-cooked pork

Being a vegetarian won't harm your health at all. In fact people who are overweight use it as a diet. I'm fine with people being vegetarians.

As long as they don't come up to me and start going on about why I shouldn't eat meat or not to eat meat around them.

Honestly I think it would be hard for them to watch everyone else eat meat. Especially when they purposely don't eat meat so the animals can live.

I think being a vegetarian is perfectly fine, and you can be just as healthy without meat as you can with meat.

Being a vegan, however, I think is taking it a little too far. Cutting out meat, dairy, eggs, and other nutritious things from your diet can be pretty unhealthy. True, people who are vegans can stay healthy, but it is much harder to do.

Also, cutting out milk and eggs doesn't really make sense to me. I mean, cows HAVE to be milked, or they'll be in terrible pain, and the eggs that we eat aren't fertilized, meaning that a chick is NEVER going to hatch, so if we didn't eat them we'd just have a bunch of rotten eggs lying around.

I can't survive without meat, and a few friends have tried but couldn't survive either. I do have a vegetarian teacher and am amazed how she can live wihout meat. I admire people for being vegetarian, they're basically fighting for a cause which is good to see.

    lol, fatal typing error :v

Trust me, it isnt hard to watch people eat meat at all o__o

and you're forgetting not all vegetarians are vegetarian because they are against killing animals; some may be for cultural reasons or they have been brought up that way.

Im vegetarian but you shouldnt admire me for it :v

& of course there are alternatives to meat, but I realise nothing will be quite as good for you. It doesn't bother me. I eat enough other sources of protein- but I worry for vegetarians that have such poor diets that they have to take vitamin supplements.

If people want to be vegetarians, cool beans for them.

I know I could never be one though, I love my meat and in general don't really like vegetables.

    yeah you do

Tried going vegan for like a week after watching this PETA video (which in retrospect was stupid). I think the main reason why my attempt failed was because I found most soy/tofu products to be disgusting.

Convenience is another thing. The vegan and vegetarian lifestyles require extra work I don't feel like doing and money I don't feel like spending just to avoid animal/meat products.

Vegans and vegetarians miss out on vital nutrients such as iron and vitamin B12, so you have to go out of your way to get them via an alternative method (such as supplement pills). I'd rather just get them in a meal and be done with it.

I could never be a vegetarian. I love meat too much. Not to sound like an ass, but the meat's already dead. If we don't eat it, it'll rot and smell horrible.

If you want to be a vegetarian or are already one, more power to you. But you do have to go out of your way to get the nutrients that you're missing from meat. But it's your life, do whatever the hell you want with it.

Like guys, its not like we have to go out of our way :v

You can get both iron and vitamin B12 from vegetables pretty easily. I have never taken supplements ever.

There's nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, although the 'trend-vegetarians' annoy the hell out of me.

I'd probably be a vegetarian myself if it weren't for two things:
    1. I'm allergic to so many vegetables/nuts I probably would starve myself.
    2. Meat tastes sooooo damn good T_T

I think that anyone who is a vegetarian should be commended but it's just not for me. It is possible to be a vegetarian throughout life as long as you find replacements for those proteins you would not be consuming.

People can also be vegetarians because of....religious reasons. Such as Buddhism. And I think Islam too. And just like everyone else said, there are plenty of vegetables and other organic products to support a person's body in the absence of protein and other important vitamins. I wouldn't be able to do it full time because seafood is delicious.

Soy milk is paradise in a liquid. I'm not a vegetarian, but I could drink soy milk everyday. 'Specially strawberry soy milk. Yummers. =]
I believe becoming a vegetarian is morally a good idea, but I don't think I can last too long without meat.
