"How else can I kill John?" Edward mumured against the top of her head. "Lestat says he knows how... and I'll do anything to get him to tell me. You can't know what side he's on, dear. He let me go..." He narrowed his eyebrows, remembering the moment. "He dropped me from the trees and told me to get you and go, when he very well could have killed me. Yet his bite impaired my mind, my strength, and slowed my healing on my back..."

 

"So is he on both sides...?" Hannah was confused. She sighed, starting to get annoyed with the situation. "He bit you, Edward, but he let you go. There must be something he wants out of this and the only way he can get it is if he does something for both John and you and I. He might not even know what you think he does."

 

"Do you have another way?" Edward asked. "How else can I get rid of John? You have no idea how much restraint it took tonight to stop beating him right before he could have died."

 

Hannah pulled away from Edward, thinking her coldness would bother him. "Okay... I'll go along with it. But I'm scared something bad will happen." She unconsciously thought of the happenings with Elijah.

 

"Thank you, love," Edward sighed. "I have a feeling about Lestat... and it doesn't bother me," he added, pulling her close to him again. "You're always cold and my back is burning... it helps... And Eljiah," he continued after a moment, "is in the past. Don't worry yourself with it."

 

Hannah smiled. "My sweet Edward...," She looked up at him. "Perhaps it's because you can see what I'm thinking, but you always know what to say to make me feel better."

 

Edward smiled, his back suddenly not hurting that much anymore. "Thank you," he whispered. "Just know I would never say anything just to make you feel better. Now, you can rest if you want, dear," he smiled. "I cannot think of anything else to ask you at the moment. And you look like you need rest."

 

Lestat dropped his fingers from the keys, ending his improvised song. He smiled to himself, the bodies on the floor starting to smell. His nose used to it, he stood and looked around and left the house.

Put out the light... he thought again, the images coming back to his mind. And put out the light...

 

Hannah rested back against Edward. "Let me know if you think of any more questions. I'll answer as best I can." She closed her eyes, hoping there would be no more tricks from John.

 

"What does he do to you when you shut your eyes?" Edward asked, hoping he wasn't behing intrusive. "I don't understand."

 

Lestat walked through the dirty, dark streets once more, knowing he really should start traveling soon if he meant to only move by night. He was capable of moving by day, the shadows that the sun would make enough to shield him temporarily.

I'll run, he thought, grinning, and shifting to the nearest shadow. They will stop soon... then I can see how the Edward boy is enjoying my gift...

 

"Images." Hannah answered quietly. "Some moving, most still. They're almost all of you. He knows that's how to get to me." She was surprised at how calmly she spoke of her fear. "They're all of what he'll do to you if you come next time. That's why I don't want you to."

 

Edward nodded, his chin rubbing the top of her head. "He can't do anything to me... unless he has Lestat again. Did you not see what I did to John?" I

Hannah thought for a moment, trying to remember what had happened through the fog that had clouded her mind. "Yes. You scared me too a bit. But the images are still..." She searched for a word. "Terrible, really."

 

"I'm sorry," Edward apologized. "Lestat made me so angry that I couldn't hurt him, and when I saw John I let it all go... But you can rest if you want, dear... I would watch his mind for you, but thanks to Lestat, that hurts more than ten silver bullets."

 

"Then don't. If it hurts, I don't want you to." Hannah said. "I'll stay awake. It's night anyway."

 

"I'll sleep, if I can, then," Edward muttered. "If you don't mind... I don't know if I can, though; this carriage is bumping like mad."

 

"Shut up, Edward!" Van Helsing snapped, hearing his last comment clearly. "Walk, then!"

 

"Sleep. You need it more than I do." Hannah said, and then directed up to Van Helsing. "Keep it to yourself! I'll come up there if I have to!" She smiled at Edward.
