Hannah stiffened. "B-but why?"

BIC: Carl looked up, preplexed, while packing the bag. "I... understand. But what could be so odd about them that you need to tell me how to behave?"

Jinx growled deep in her throat, finding nothing and no where for her to hunt. Damn it. she turned around and stalked back to the inn, angrily.

 

"You'll see when you meet them," Van Helsing replied. "Now, do you want to get some food before I pass out and we leave?"

 

"Oh, yes, sure." Carl searched around before pulling out bread and cheese from under a pile of papers. "When do I get to meet these friends?"

 

"I guess she had a thing against werewolves," Edward said, trying to laugh. It didn't sound very happy. "She told me I was scum and the rest of my king were freaks or something like that... but it gets worse. She was really going to kill me, Hannah." He stopped and caught her eye, holding her gaze. "It sounds weak now, but I couldn't stop her. I had no choice; she would have killed me."

 

"They are all staying at a local inn... we can find them and meet them. Save your food for the road," Van Helsing replied, and started toward the door.

 

Carl dropped the food in the bag and followed Van Helsing to the door. "Okay, so if I can't know what's so speical about them, how should I behave?" he promted.

Jinx stared at the ground, trying to concentrate on something besides all the live people milling around her while she walked back to the inn. She ignored the feeling around the church as she strod past it.

 

Hannah's eyes widened. "You...?" She couldn't finished, couldn't believe it. "Edward, you...?"

 

Elijah snuck up behind Angelyn, wrapping his arms around her. Her squeel issued giggles from her friends. "Miss me?" He teased.

 

"As if..." Van Helsing began, and then grinned. "As if they were normal people, Carl."

 

Carl frowned at Van Helsing. "I'm not liking where this is going. What-." he bumped into Jinx before he could finish because he wasn't paying attention to the people around him, "sorry miss."

Jinx looked up, startled. She could tell he had come from the church and had to try not to bolt from the feeling. "No problem." she answered quickly and then noticed Van Helsing. "Hey, so this is your friend?" she asked.

 

Edward looked away from her, angry tears coming to his eyes. "You remember all those odd, violent feelings I was telling you about? Well, they took control of me once she cocked that gun. Somehow I knew the bullets were silver. She fired and I transformed and got out of the way... the next thing I knew... she... I... I pulled Van Helsing's gun... I shot her... the blood was..." Edward faded off, gagging slightly at the gorey memory and his head aching with pain and guilt. He couldn't look at Hannah again.

 

"Yes," Van Helsing replied, wondering what Jinx was doing out on her own. "Carl, this is Jinx, a wonderfully talented girl who will be one of my... friends joining us. Jinx, dear," Van Helsing added, turning to her, knowing how she hated being called that. "This is Carl, a very smart fellow who comes in handy in most situations... anyway, can you lead us to the inn you and Hannah found?"

 

"Nice to meet you Jinx." Carl smiled and offered his hand to shake her's.

Jinx looked at his hand and tentively shook it. Well, he'll find out soon enough, let's see how smart he is. she dropped her hand quickly and glared at Van Helsing for calling her dear. "yeah, follow me." she muttered, starting off again to the inn.

Carl fell into step next to Van Helsing. "Alright, what's going on? She's ice cold, but she looks normal enough. Why wouldn't I treat her like a normal person?" he asked under his breath.

 

Hannah embraced Edward. "I want to do something for you. I want to help, Edward."

 

Elijah let go of Angelyn, smiling at her friends, enjoying the giggles and blushes.

"Can we go now?" Angelyn asked. "I want to see what you got this time."

"It's just a buck." Elijah said, ruining the surprise. He held back a smirk as the girls 'oohed' and 'aahed'.

"Just a buck?" Angelyn repeated. "They're the hardest to bring down!"

"Yeah," Elijah took a moment to be proud of himself, allowing his mini-fan club to gaze at him. "Anyway, we need to be getting home."

"Right now?" Angelyn asked. "We were going to go look at the new stock that our favorite store has."

Elijah rolled his eyes. "If you're not home by dark, I'm coming for you."

Angelyn smiled. "Thanks!"

Elijah watched the group run off. What am I gonna do with her?

 

"She's just... naturally cold, Carl," Van Helsing replied. That's not really a lie, is it? he thought with a smile. "What?" he lowered his voice. "Do you like her or something?"

 

"I killed an old woman, Hannah," Edward grimaced, wiping his tears off his face and pulling away from Hannah. "I don't think there's much you can do, dear." He barely caught himself before the word was out of his mouth. He only blushed slightly.

 

"What? no. But you said-" Carl stopped as Jinx turned a cold look at them.

"Having fun gossping boys?" she asked, casually, turning her gaze back to where she was going. "there's the inn, Edward and Hannah are inside our room." she informed them, as they reached the door.

 

Color rose in Hannah's pale cheeks. She wanted to reach out to Edward, but held herself back. "I- I'm going to find Van Helsing." She said, standing up and leaving quickly. She knew it wasn't the truth, but she didn't want to tell Edward what she was really doing. As she got outside, she found a solitary place and searched the air for the scent she'd caught earlier.
