"Yes, for some reasong Edward seems to need him or whatever." Carl frowned, "Edward's... been a little... well, he's going to endanger us by keeping all these secrets about those people who are tracking us, even if they aren't after us. They would probably have no problem killing us to get at their goal..." he said.

Jinx looked at her hand. "Well, that depends... it could result in a mix, meaning you become part werewolf and part vampire... if you are very lucky. And more likely... you die of all the conflict in your body." she answered, softly.

 

Beatrice bit her lip. "So," She looked at the sleeping Hannah. "Hannah could....?"

 

"Oh, I know," Van Helsing nodded. "I can trust Edward for now. But once we get close to Dracula, he'll tell me what he's up to or I will kill him."

 

Do it, Edward snapped. I'm sorry, it's just... I can't take it. Every tie I turn my back there's something there to hurt her. I need to get rid of him because we can't live like this. You must understand. This is something I have to do. Haven't you ever loved someone and wanted to do anything for them?

 

"I hope it doesn't come to that, for Edward's sake and for your's... Hannah would go insane if you killed Edward." Carl took a sip of his drink.

Jinx nodded, sadly. "It's actully more likely than the other outcome... maybe theirs a cure though... if we could find it."

 

Lestat sighed. Vampires cannot love in the same terms as werewolves or humans. We do love, yes, but it's different. I don't know how to describe it. That's why I'm so impressed with John's... with Hannah: she shouldn't be capable of what she's feeling... all the more reason to keep you two together.

 

"We will see," Van Helsing muttered. "I cannot help it if he endangers our purpose. But then, though, I'm sure John will have gotten a hold of Hannah anyway."

 

"don't be so sure, even if you and I don't do anything, I think the other two ladies just might kill John if Edward doesn't." Carl suggested, remembering Beatice and Jinx running off after John the last time.

 

Beatrice hung her head. "I wish there was something I could do for her...."

 

"Maybe," Van Helsing said, finishing his drink. "I don't know anymore."

 

I understand, Edward replied, though he really didn't I need your help, Lestat, and you know it.

 

Lestat sighed once more, going to walk around the trees slowly. There was a time long ago when I was in the Greek islands. I met one of the oldest living vampires in the world. He told me everything he knew... he was the caretaker of Those Who Must Be Kept: the mother and father of all vampires. I drank from the woman... that is why I'm so indestructible, more than any other immortal in this world. Yet I've tried to kill myself many times. I've met and loved people like you before, Edward. Nicolas de Lenfent, Louis de Pointe de Lac... and I ruined all of them. Yet now, against some of my own will, I will tell you what I can because I think you and Hannah deserve it.

 

"It's confusing isn't it? Things aren't so simple lately..." Carl finsihed his drink as well, "How annoying."

"I know, we can't let her just die. But I don't know of any cure for this... and she's still got some human blood in her... maybe she'll just become a cross instead of dying." Jinx tired to sound cheerful. "I'm sure we'll figure this out, Beatice, it's okay."

 

"Can't we at least make her more comfortable?" Beatrice asked, seeing how tightly Hannah was curled.

 

Jinx sighed, "Yeah... we can get her what she's meant to eat..." she muttered, hating the idea. "If you stay here with her, I'll get her... a..." she winced at the idea. "I'll get her a human."

 

"We'll figure it out," Van Helsing sighed. "First things first, though. I've got to go out and track where that last werewolf is."

 

Edward nodded, his head hurting even more. He ground his teeth together, ignoring the pain and waiting for Lestat to continue.

 

Marius told me many things, dating back to four thousand years before Roman times. Only more recent generations of vampires have the idea that a creator and a child are bound together through death. That is something I've had to learn, though Armand's creator spoke a little of it. I don't know if I am completely right, but I am the only chance you have.

Werewolves have smaller amounts of healing power than vampires. Someone like me can heal instantly, Hannah can heal fast, and you can heal almost as fast... when I haven't bit you for the fun of it. But any vampire can be killed if it's done quickly, fast enough that they can't have the time to naturally react and heal themselves.

What you must do involves something completely against your nature... your werewolf nature. But it can be done, because I know you are fast enough and strong enough to do it. Right now, you must listen closely, and do exactly what I say when the time is right. Also know that if you fail and don't complete the task, I cannot help you or make it better. Once you start, there's no going back.

 

Edward listened carefully, his eyes widening when he heard Lestat's words.

"It seems simple, in a way," he said once the vampire had finished. "And awful at the same time. But... thank you. I will repay you, Lestat, in any way I can when it's over."

 

Beatrice cringed. "It has to be a human...?"
