Jinx smiled at them, "I wonder who would win if you guys did get into a fight." she commented.

 

"I'd think it's obvious," Van Helsing smiled rudely. "But I'm not upset with you, Edward. I merely wished you would have asked me."

 

Edward laughed. "Oh, yes," he began sarcastically. "With John and that God damned Lestat following me I had plenty of time to turn around and tell you I would be borrowing Lexi to keep Hannah safe."

He saw Van Helsing open his mouth to retort, but cut him off: "It doesn't matter now. We're all alive and will be safe now that we have the carriages to hide you ladies from the sun."

Edward stood with Hannah in his arms, curled in a ball asleep against his bare chest. "She'll be fine; she's just... emotionally and physically tired," he said, seeing Jinx's concerned look. "Let's start back to the others. Did..." he added suddenly, turning to the two in front of him. "Did you leave Carl and Beatrice alone together?"

Beatrice bit her tongue and nodded to Carl, and went to sit back atop her carriage, hugging her knees to her chest.

Hannah opened her eyes half way. "Are we going now...?"

"Yes," Edward smiled as they walked. "Will get you in the carriage soon."

 

"Is everything okay?" Hannah asked, still half asleep.

"For now," Edward replied. "They're gone, I think... or at least John is for now."

 

Hannah smiled and closed her eyes, relaxing back against Edward. "That's good."

 

"Well, okay then... let's go." Jinx said, "Lexie looks happy to see you... I think... is that how a horse looks when it's happy?"

Carl leaned against the other carrige, trying not to look at Beatice.

 

"Of course," Van Helsing smiled, leading Lexi next to them. "And I don't plan to be parted from her again," he added.

 

"How far are we from the town now?" Edward asked.

 

"That's sweet. I hope you're not parted from her again." Jinx said, smiling and beginning to walk back to the carriges.

 

"I don't know. Close, hopefully." Hannah answered.

 

"Me, too," Van Helsing sighed, giving Jinx a wide grin. "Thank you for your support."

 

"Good," Edward said. "We all need to rest and get around more people so these rogue idiots like John, Will, and Lestat can stop following us."

 

"No problem. Everyone needs a companion that they are that close to." Jinx replied, smiling back at him. "And species doesn't really matter at this point, I don't think."

 

Van Helsing stayed smiling. "I'm glad you think that now," he muttered, giving Edward and Hannah a sideways glance.

 

Edward only winked when he caught Van Helsing eye. He spotted the carriages and Carl and Beatrice.

"Alright there?" he asked when they walked over.
