Van Helsing (Cont.)

"You're right," Edward replied, letting his smile fade. "Just... don't dwell on what you did last night, okay?" He put his hands on her shoulders and gave her a serious look. "Understand?" he continued in a low voice. "I don't care if you rip a dozen people in half each night and then masacre their children, okay? It doesn't matter to me, whether it be you or Jinx or Hannah, even. But what Lestat says is poison; his words are like that if he wants them to be. Just... be careful; don't get hurt or caught."

 

Hannah bit back her rising fear. "No. I trust him."

Michael quietly answered Jinx's question, "Edward is going to try to kill John tonight."

"But-" Beatrice hung her head and bit her lip, her hair falling to the sides of her face.

 

Jinx opened her mouth slightly but didn't say anything, surprised.

Carl's eyes got wide. "How can he do that? It'll hurt Hannah." he asked, confuzzled.

 

"Smart guy, isn't he?" Van Helsing sighed, kneeling in front of the mirror now. "I thought he'd like you, Hannah, not wanted to kill you."

 

"Van Helsing..." Jinx warned at his harsh comment, looking at him sharply. "He probably found a way to do it safely. Maybe Lestat told him about a method." she thought outloud.

 

Hannah ground her teeth. "He knows what he's doing. And besides, I'd gladly risk this life to have the chance of being free of John."

Michael put his hand on Hannah's shoulder. "We understand. Stay calm."

 

"Do you want to know something that might cheer you up a bit?" Edward asked suddenly, squeezing Beatrice's shoulders so she looked up at him. "You remind me of my little sister... the last one in my family that was turned by an insane werewolf decades ago. Van Helsing killed her a week or so ago, getting rid of the last of that crazy b.astard's line, except for me... but I'm different, as you can see. Anyway... you remind me of her before all that happened. That's why I wanted to make sure you're alright, that you don't get hurt or in trouble, over your head. She was like you; sweet, strong, smart, kind, quiet.... underestimated. I just don't want the same thing to happen to you. You do have a Gift, in a way. Don't waste it."

 

"You four and your probems," Van Helsing grumbled, ignoring Hannah's statement.

 

"I've never had any siblings...," Beatrice murmured, lowering her eyes. "But maybe this is what it feels like to have an older brother." She looked back up at Edward, smiling sadly. "I'll try my best to stay out of trouble for you."

"I'd like to see how you handle being a monster!" Hannah snapped at Van Helsing. "What would you do if you became one of us?"

Michael tightened his grip on Hannah.

 

Van Helsing rose and glared at Hannah, taking a step toward her till he stood directly in front of her. "Let's hope you never find out," he snapped angrily.

 

Edward sighed happily. "Good," he muttered, crushing her in a brief hug before letting her go. "Just start by staying away from him tonight when he comes."

 

Jinx exchanged looks with Carl, who nodded, and walked up beside Van Helsing, looking coldly at him. "You don't understand what you're even talking about. You're just angry and taking it out on Hannah. Cool down."

 

"Okay," Beatrice agreed after a moment.

Michael pulled Hannah away from Van Helsing, seeing how ready she was to do whatever harm she could. "Calm down," He told her firmly but sweetly.

A low growl passed through Hannah's clenched teeth. She let Michael hold her and closed her eyes, trying to calm down.

 

Van Helsing was about to retort but looked at Jinx and his mouth twisted into a frown. "I don't think you understand," he muttered, though a little calmer.

 

"Ah, s.hit," Edward growled after nodding at Beatrice, loooking around the corner at the others. "Can't leave her alone. Come on," he muttered, rounding the corner and marching back over toward the mirror.

 

Jinx glared at him, moving between Hannah and Micheal, and Van Helsing instinctivly. "I think I understand well enough and better than you." she retorted. "Just leave her alone, alright?"

"Maybe everyone needs to blow off some steam before you start hurting each other." Carl suggested, warey of everyone's short tempers.

Beatrice hurried after Edward.

Hannah trembled under Michael's hands.

Michael placed two fingers under Hannah's chin and lifted her face to look at him. He was surprised to see that she was crying, and her tears were bright red and thick. "Hannah?"

Hannah jerked away from Michael to face Van Helsing. "Don't talk about us like you understand us!"

 

"Fine," Van Helsing muttered, and went to sit in the nearest chair, putting his head in his hands and sighing.

"Hannah," Edward began, stepping over to her and touching her arm lightly. "What the hell did you do, you b.astard?" he added angrily, snapping his gaze to Van Helsing now.

 

Michael put his hands back on Hannah's shoulders and moved his thumbs in slow circles between her shoulderblades. "Just relax."

The tension and anger slowly ebbed away, leaving Hannah with just sadness. "I'm fine." She said at last.

"Are you sure?" Beatrice asked worriedly.

Hannah nodded, though she found it hard to breathe and she couldn't ignore the warm tears on her cheeks. Using the back of her hand, she wiped her cheek. Blood? She thought when she saw the red on her hand.

"Hannah?" Michael moved in front of her. "Hannah, you look like you're about to faint." Seeing her gaze, he pulled his sleeve over his wrist and wiped the blood off her hand and other cheek. "There; it's gone."
