Van Helsing (Cont.)

"Alright then," Michael said slowly. "I'll get rid of Van Helsing for you." He smiled at Beatrice.

 

Beatrice smiled back. "Thanks."

 

"Sorry," Edward replied. "It's something I want but something I'm worried to death about at the same time... does that make sense?"

 

"I..." Jinx began and then stopped, not entirly sure how to answer. "I guess there isn't anything much in it for me. But they're my friends... I want to help them and I don't want to get caught up alone with Will." she looked at him steadily. "Why does it matter? What about you?"

 

Back off, Van Helsing sent to Michael, hearing his voice nearby. I'm starting not to trust you with her.

 

"Yeah," Hannah answered. "I just want to try to be positive about... it."

 

"I act on impulse," Lestat laughed. "Always... I never learn from my mistakes, even after two centuries worth of them. I regret only sometimes... now is not one of them."

 

"Not a problem," Michael started to reach for Beatrice's hand but caught himself and took his hand back.

 

"Interesting. I hope nothing happens that makes you regret." Jinx replied, her voice only slightly edged with warning. "... is it really so bad for you? What you were saying before. If you've been a vampire so long... shouldn't it be easier for you?" she felt a spark of annoyance in her for asking at all, for being interested in the idea of asking another vampire for information.

"Good idea," Edward yawned. "I don't know if I'll be able to, but..." He faded off, turning his head to look out the window. "Looks like we talked the night away," he sighed, nodding at the lightening sky.

 

"Oh, it is easier in many ways than it will ever be for you or little Bee and Hannah," Lestat replied swiftly, waving one hand in the air as if the comment were nothing. "But there are prices to be paid for killing; murderering is still a sin even if it is done for survival and without any vindictive purposes. I can do so many things, but, at the same time, my children do not love me, my best friend is dead, and my life will never end. So you must contemplate death a lot when it doesn't seem so prominent, nothing to be afraid of. Death and the devil. I would love to meet the devil himself one night, chase him across the ocean up to the sun itself. I am the devil!"

 

"Getting light out here, isn't it?" Van Helsing spoke, stepping over to where Beatrice and Michael stood.

 

Jinx couldn't help laughing shortly. "If you're the devil, I'll stop worrying about hell." her expression cleared of her smile. "Do you really think you are so bad or worse than the devil?" she asked, incredulously.

 

Hannah kept her eyes closed. "They'll get us if they need us," She smiled, not wanting to get up.

Beatrice looked up, noticing for the first time how much taller Michael was than herself. He's blocking the sun from me. She realized, seeing his posture.

Michael just nodded in acknowledgement to Van Helsing's statement. "Why don't you and I go for a walk? Beatrice can handle the horses."

 

Van Helsing frowned slightly but nodded. "If you insist," he agreed.

 

"True," Edward sighed, and reached over to put his hand on her cheek. "You should rest..."

 

"I think that I am much worse," Lestat replied with a smile. "If you're lucky, you'll never find out what I mean."

 

"So should you," Hannah said.

Beatrice looked breifly at Michael before going over to Sorin.

"So," Michael spoke once Beatrice seemed occupied. "Where shall we go?"

 

"Well, if you don't want Beatrice to hear, I suggest walking this way," Van Helsing replied.

 

"I already told you I can't sleep," Edward reminded her. "But I can... shut my eyes... for a bit..."
