"Poor Carl," Edward muttered. "He's better off, though, don't you think?"

"You mean by not being with Beatrice?" Hannah asked. "I guess so... Right now, I think Bee just loves his scent."

"I think Hannah's still mad at me though," Beatrice murmured.

 

"I don't think you should worry about it.she doesn't really seem mad at you, more like herself maybe." Jinx shrugged. "Or just everything in general. We don't know how her first moon went...".

 

"Beatrice and I have a theory," Michael interjected.

 

Jinx turned to look at him, mildly. "And what is it?" she asked, curiously.

 

"Maybe so," Edward said. "In her case... but Carl? I don't think it's scent that he's so... intrigued by."

You're a very peculiar man, you know, Lestat began randomly, not knowing if John would hear him or not.

 

Hannah sighed. "I know. But he can't get to close to her right now. Maybe in a year or two, but not now. And I'm not just saying that because she's sixteen."

"Well," Beatrice started. "It's Michael's theory really."

So are you, John replied bitterly

 

"It's obvious, isn't it?" Michael looked at Jinx. "Her eyes give it away completely."

 

"She'll always be sixteen now," Edward pointed out. "But I think Carl can wait a year or two... Van Helsing can't, that's for sure..."

 

But you surprise me, that is my point, Lestat said, a small laugh giving away how much he took John's last statement as a complement. Why you still let her stay, I do not know...

 

Jinx frowned, a little sadly. "Look, all that's obvious to me is that I can smell blood on her but it's not human. So what's your theory?"

 

"Well," Michael began carefully. "She either killed someone, or her time with that Lestat fellow was more pleasurable than she wants to let on."

 

Jinx's mouth formed an O and then she bit down on her lip. "That... unfortunetly, makes sense." she drumbed her fingers on her leg. "I keep trying to figure out what the other scent on her is... I hope you're wrong is all I can say."

 

I'm waiting for nightfall, John explained, his tone still acidic. I won't have someone like her as mine. His phrasing implying more than what he said.

Hannah lowered her eyes. "She has too much to deal with for her age," She sighed. "And Van Helsing can't contain himself to save his life."

Beatrice nodded. "I don't know of any other explination."

 

Edward nodded. "I want to go soon," he began suddenly. "Leave here... I don't feel safe."
