Van Helsing (Cont.)

Edward reached the inn now and reached under Hannah to pull the door open. He ignored the several people that were sitting at tables and walked up the stairs as fast as he could. "What's the matter with you?" he muttered, almost to himself.

 

"Having trouble?" Lestat began with a small smile, appearing behind John.

 

"John's upset," Hannah murmured.

John turned to look at Lestat. "You would know! I saw what you did! Her memories are too vivid for you to tell me that you didn't!" His hands balled into fists, his eyes burning.

"Why would Edward be mad at you?" Beatrice asked.

 

Michael leaned against the wall. Complicated happenings around here.

 

"I can't really remember," Van Helsing laughed. "I think he's still holding a grduge for wanting to kill Hannah or not trusting him... I don't know."

 

"I know, love, I know," Edward murmured, climbing the last of the stairs now. "I'm just trying to figure out why now. Shall we see everyone else or go to the other room?"

 

"I was protecting her," Lestat shrugged, resisting the urge to wink. "Helping keep her safe."

 

"Yeah. Well it is hard to get over death threats." Jinx said, smiling meaningfully, "But he'll feel better about it soon enough, then you two can fight about something else."

 

"Doesn't matter," Hannah breathed. "I'm... I'm okay now, I think."

"Protecting her?!" John repeated. "You took her to a secluded place and seduced her, and you expect me to believe you?!"

"He can hold a grudge that long?" Beatrice asked, amazed. "Huh..."

 

"So true," Van Helsing laughed, squeezing her shoulder. "Maybe he's-"

 

"Might as well face them now," Edward sighed, setting her down on her feet but still supporting her weight. He opened the unlocked door where all the voices were coming from and cut off Van Helsing's sentence.

"Hi," he muttered, leading Hannah carefully into the room.

 

"I do apologize if I have offended you, what with your interpretation of last night," Lestat replied politely.

 

"Is she okay?" Carl asked, surprised by how upset the two looked.

Jinx's smile disapeared. "What's wrong with Hannah?" she demanded. In the back of her mind she noticed that Hannah smelled vaguely different, another scent mixing with her normal one.

 

Hannah kept her eyes the ground, not wanting to look at anyone.

"You okay? What happened?" Beatrice questioned.

"Not now, Bee," Hannah mumbled.

"Don't give me any of your bullsh*t." John snapped. "Just stay away from her."

 

Michael watched Hannah, staying quiet. He could see her black hair over her shoulders, but her hood blocked her face from his view.

 

Van Helsing said nothing, deciding it was best to keep his mouth shut.

 

"Just let her be," Edward said, helping Hannah over to the closest bed and sitting with her. "She's physically fine; John's just bothering her for some reason."

 

"Of course," Lestat said honestly, bowing just slightly. "Whatever makes you feel better."

 

Jinx bit her lip and nodded. "Okay..." she muttered, looking at Hannah carefully.

Hannah leaned against Edward after taking her hood off, and closed her eyes. "Doesn't hurt too much anymore." She said quietly. Noticing the new scent in the room, she lifted her head and looked around, her eyes finally resting on Michael.

"Oh...," Beatrice noticed Hannah's gaze. "Hannah, this is Michael."

John turned away from Lestat and stalked off into the woods.
