Van Helsing (Cont.)

Hannah cautiously opened her eyes and took a small step away from Lestat. "How...?" She mumbled, staring at her surroundings.

"He does." Beatrice assured them. "Can't you tell?"

 

"What about Will?" Van Helsing asked. "I'd love to meet him tonight."

 

"Well, I've-" Edward began, and stopped himself, swallowing another stab of a howl that ran through his body. "I... have to go outside soon... you'd do best to stay away from me, though."

 

"Just a trick," Lestat replied smoothly. "Taught by a very awful woman."

 

"If she was awful, why did you learn from her?" Hannah asked, distracted.

 

Jinx tensed. "Okay." she said to Edward, "Be careful, though." she looked at Van Helsing. "Why do you want to see Will? Don't we have enough trouble tonight?"

Carl leaned his elbows on the back of an empty chair. "If he's helping Hannah, that's good." he said, looking at Beatrice, "How come you trust him so much though? Just wondering." he added quickly, not wanting her to storm off again.

 

"Because I loved her," Lestat began slowly. "I was... entranced, seduced, infatuated, overwhelmed... however you'd like to phrase it. I didn't see at the time, until it was too late, how powerful, wrong, and twisted her views were."

 

"I guess that happens to all of us..." Hannah murmured.

Beatrice thought for a moment. "I don't know. I just do."

 

Lestat? Edward tried. What's happened?
But he got no response, no connection felt in his mind.

He cried out suddenly, gripping his stomach through his new, soft shirt. "Here..." he said slowly, pulling off the shirt and throwing it at Van Helsing. "Put that in my... room, please... I've got to go..."

And Edward turned, walking as quickly as he could out the front door of the inn, sprinting once his face hit the cold, night air. I can't hear them... he thought, his anger amplified by the moon. They must be too far away or... something... He sprinted faster now, bursting into fur and sharp teeth before he gave the transformation more than a second thought.

 

Lestat nodded. "She's dead now..." he began. "She made me do some awful things... things that make what I usually do look kind. But that would be a conversation for downstairs. How are you feeling now?"

Hannah's distraction faded. "It just... hurts."

"Did... he.. just...?" Beatrice stared at the shirt in Van Helsing's arms.

 

"Oh, please," Van Helsing sighed, rolling his eyes at Beatrice. "What are you two doing the rest of the night, then?"

 

Jake caught the scent of another werewolf. His claws dug into the dirt. If he's running around then he either lost his sick obsession of a vampire, or he's hunting something. Or someone. He padded in the opposite direction. I'll just keep my distance. I'm in no condition for a fight.

Jinx smiled alittle bit. "Beatrice, you're going to have to get used to that eventually. I think it's going to happen about once a month from now on." she warned, "As for tonight, I don't know. Hopefully maybe hunt at some point... but somehow that doesn't actully seem like such a good idea. What do you think?"

Carl couldn't help being amused at Beatrice's expression and forced back a laugh.

 

"Well, then," Lestat said, taking her hand and smiling when she shivered. "Just follow me and I'll keep you distracted."

He turned and led her down a hallway out of the main bedroom they stood in, the walls covered in torced that seemed to have lit seconds before just because he thought the word "light." The pathway descended into stairs now, leading the way far into the earth, deep into the center of the island. They reached a door that was bolted shut and he thought "open" and the locks snapped apart.

"This way," he said, and they stepped into another hallway that was barred by a similar door. When they were past it, Lestat stopped at a final door. "This is where they were kept."

 

"Go out," Van Helsing sighed, almost shrugging as if he was giving up. "It's going to have to happen soon, so just go out... and I'll do what I do best."

 

Edward lifted his nose in the air, smelling it carefully, trying to find the hunter purposefully. What a coward, he thought angrily. He damn well knows I'm out here.

 

"I feel like I shouldn't be here." Hannah confessed. "I mean... this place is so... still. Like it demands reverence."

Beatrice nodded meekly at Jinx.

 

"What's that?" Jinx asked, already standing up.
