Me and my sister were discussing this the other day, we thought that usually sequels are a lot worse than the original but the game company Valve seem to improve upon a second game. I suppose this is debatable depending on which games you prefer but in my opinion I prefer all the second games

    e.g. Portal 2 > Portal?
Team Fortress 2 > Team fortress?
Left 4 dead 2 > Left for dead?
Half life 2 > Half life?

    Well, what do you think?

I agree with most of the notions.

To be honest, Portal 2 was just as good as the first in my opinion since Portal 1 was hard to improve on really, the main improvement was the addition of Multi-Player.

Left for Dead 2, was definitely a lot better than the first game, so many improvements and stuff made it a lot more enjoyable.

I only briefly played the Half Life games and Team Fortress games... so I can't say much about them, but yeah :P

I think i agree in the main to this. I've not played L4D2 so I don't know if I can give an opinion on that one, but the other three i would agree with.

Sidenote- TF2's free to play now apparently.

I agree on most, but TF vs TF2 is sort of a moot point because TF was a third party mod for Quake which became so popular that Valve sponsored Team Fortress Classic, leading into Team Fortress 2, which was its own game. I haven't played the L4D series either, so nothing there. Another thing to keep in mind is that the only games that are totally made up of Valve's intellectual property are the Half Life series and Portal 2. Others use Valve's Source engine, which is usually updated by the time a sequel is ready for development.

Ahh, I didn't know that, thank you.

Yes, Team fortress 2 has become so popular they can afford to make it free, I didn't understand this but then maybe they felt they're making enough money from selling hats.

Anyway, I suppose it's mostly down to the fact that they add additional things in the second game that are usually quite a hit. Portal was an amazing game in itself, the only thing that made Portal 2 better was it was extended and there was more to do.

The only games I can comment on are the Left 4 Dead titles, and I agree, there was a great improvement from L4D 1 to L4D 2. Valve seems to be the only game company (of my knowledge) to actually make great improvements on most of their games' sequels.

Valve is the exception to all rules. They actually care about their customers, they provide quality products, and they make improved sequels. I will always love Valve. Portal 2 is much better than Portal, yes. As for the rest, I've only played the sequels and not the originals :P

Iv'e played nearly all those games and their sequels. They really do seem to add something new to every game whether it be new game modes, content etc...

They must have a very good creative team to come up with improvements each time. Or they have greater resources/money and are able to do more as such. Ormaybe they've always been holding back their full game ideas for the next one.
Though to be honest, they're good at making a new game and it's sequel but that's about it. I've yet to seethem make a full fledge trilogy of something. They get to a sequel and then seem to move on to a new game entirely. Maybe that's the consequence of making a good sequel. They can't top it.

There are many reasons why I am fond of Valve, but their sequels are definitely one of the main ones. The most recent sequel that I have played is Portal 2, and I must say I felt it was much better than the first. They're very impressive when it comes to improvements in my opinion.

I definitely like Valve's games as they're always well developed and make sure that the players enjoy the game as much as possible. Portal 2 is an example of this as the story is well thought out and gripping and almost never gets boring, thanks to all the humor that's poured into it. In a way, they kind of remind me of Capcom, as most of their sequels are excellent and don't fail to impress, the Phoenix Wright series is a perfect example of Capcom's genius

It's because Valve has a really strong, creative development team. They improve with their sequels and expand on the universe with in the games.
