I clicked on a link on facebook sent by my friend. I am generally wary and really it was a stupid mistake because I wasn't thinking straight at the time. Anyway, my laptop is ****ing screwed.
I can't access the startup menu or safety mode at all, although it soon goes into the safety mode logon screen. Before logging in, it starts shutting down again and then restarts with the normal screen. Once started, I can't access my malware protection and everything has been turned off. I got Windows firewall back on, but nothing else. McAffee won't even open.
I tried typing in some of this info and my computer shut down on its own.
I can guarantee that the problem is running under svchost.exe.
My computer is an HP G50 laptop with Vista and the Intel Pentium Dual-Core.
For now I've removed the battery and it is remaining off.

Have you tried leaving it off for a while?

Also, from what you typed, it sounds like either a virus or just pure coincidence that it started spazzing out then.

definitely a virus. i left my computer on after i downloaded it by accident because i shredded it so i thought it would be okay. i left and heard my music stop so i came back and it was shutting itself down. i tried leaving it off fof about 10 hours while i went to the fair.
please excuse my typing, my phone is being stupid.

Do you have a restore point to use? I would go for that ASAP.

Are you able to access the Task Manager? If so, go to the Processes tab and go through the list -- are there any suspicious looking processes you see?

no restore point i know of. there is q backup drive but i don't know how to access it or use it.

it's running under scvhost.exe, two copies of it. tried getting rid of them but they pop back after a minute or two. my rundll32 also doubled, if i remember correctly.

I'm not quite sure what you can do, but your best bet is to get a professional to look at it, I suppose.
Also, be super wary of links, especially of Facebook ones. I never click Facebook links...Because half of them aren't even put by that person. You can usually tell because of the way the "Status" is set up, and the link, end such.

How much time do you have between resets (approx.)? Advanced System Care had a malware component that acts faster than the in depth virus scans. If it can find it then that is probably the fastest way to snuff it out then.

Oh durr sorry you had already said that in the OP xD The Task Manager is working, though, right?

If so, you might try this if you want to do a SysRestore since you can't use Start (also a way to check if you have any restore points at all):

open the Task Manager up and go to File > New Task (Run...)

    Type in the following:

    %systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe

This should bring up System Restore.
If this works and you have restore points available, try to choose one from before you had the virus.

scvhost.exe isn't a virus for the record. It may be one named as that but scvhost.exe is needed in order for things to process well on computers. If I am not mistaken it runs shared processes and hosts.

^ Correct. svchost.exe is like a central hub for shared processes on your computer. It's not a virus. Don't worry about that one. Neither is rundll32, that's another Windows system process.

Try what Misty suggested first, if you can get in to do a system restore that should do the trick. If not, get back to me.

Worst case scenario is what I call the "boot-n-nuke", which unfortunately will wipe the whole system (including any important files) clean. This I wouldn't suggest doing yourself; even I don't do this myself (and I'm usually pretty good with this stuff)

did one system restore. computer only started in safety mode with no options. f8 wouldn't work. pressed esc and ran scans but nothing helped. now running another system restore. next weekend my friend who's better than any pro said he'd fix it but i really don't want to leave this an issue for so long.

EDIT; after second sys rec i was able to open f8. normal started as safety mode. trying last good boot.

Wiped and reset. Lost everything, but on the bright side I now have space for World of Warcraft. Sorry for inconveniences. </3

Good that you got your computer working, Peprika!
Although the fact that you lost everything is not so good. :x

Sorry you had to wipe it, but it's good to hear it's working again at least.

Going to close this now since the problem is solved, let me know if you'd like it opened back up again to add something.
