    1. Being a weeaboo is NOT a good thing

    2. Being an otaku is NOT a good thing. An otaku is incapable of handling the simplest of social situations and is only knowledgeable about anime and manga, other subjects such as literature, politics and everything else are foreign to the otaku. The otaku has little to no friends and would rather watch anime then hang out with buddies or go to family gatherings. The otaku only watches a certain type of an anime, if you like Death Note you are NOT an otaku. If you like Lucky Star then you are on your way.

    3. Watching anime does not make you a weeaboo. Worshipping Japan and everything about it when you're not Japanese makes you a weeaboo.

tl;dr: You don't WANT to be like Travis Touchdown.

You're thinking of a hikkikomori, a shut-in. Look at Konata in Lucky Star, a stereotypical otaku. She handles herself just fine, save for some idiosyncrasies that everyone else just has to get used it. Plus, there are more kinds of otaku than anime otakus. American Cinema nerds are very common in Japan. Then again, otaku used to be a euphemism for hikkikomori, so it is still extremely insulting.

tl;dr: It's okay to BE otaku, not so much to be CALLED otaku, and even worse to call YOURSELF an otaku.

Konata is an idealisation of Otaku
Cute girl who get's good grades but plays video games and also watches anime
It's a contrast to the actual reality of most otaku

A Hikkimori is a shut in
An Otaku is not s shut in but that does not mean that they are any better at handling social situations.

Well in that case use Keima Katsuragi from The World God Only Knows. He is clearly very good in social situations, but still dislikes them very much and prefers his games (though most of his social aptitude was learned by playing those games). It's even mentioned on many occasions by his classmates that he's a megganotaku (glasses otaku) and he's generally not seen as anyone you'd want to be friends with (though I disagree with that). Is this closer to your definition?
