    I joined my college's anime club, and one of the rules was that the Pres has to give you a nickname to make your membership official.

    The name she gave me was Spike.

    That day was full of so much win for me.

    How long have you been here kiddo

    In short: A weaboo is a poser, an otaku is a fanatic. Fair bit of overlap; not quite the same.

    Calling yourself an otaku is actually screaming 'weeaboo', just saying.

    ... Except that Otaku is used for anyone with an obsessive hobby, whether they are native Japanese or otherwise. Computer nerds, manga and anime addicts, gamers and the like are considered otaku. The legal term associated with them for citizens is NEET (not in education, employment, or training). It comes from the cultural idea that a worker cannot have an obsession other than his occupation (as I understand it). Weeaboo refers specifically to outsiders who are fascinated with the culture and are essentially obsessed tourists, whether they get to go there or not.

    ... Or you can just refer to RvR's post.

    Looks like I'm more Otaku than Weaboo.
    But, c'mon, one of these is not fair!

    Pocky is not delicious, not is it worth the money compared to other candies.

    If that's the case, then apparently everyone who has ever found Pocky through the Asian food aisle at Wal-Mart is a weaboo. I did this long before I was a diehard Haruhi fanatic.

    A more concise description could be based on their original meanings:
    Weaboo=Japanese for nonsense.
    Otaku=Japanese for "house dweller," originally from an archaic honourific referring to one's house (clan). This eventually became a euphemism for people in a hikkikomori condition (shut-ins) and is now a very insulting term used to refer to nerds.

    Buying Pocky because you actually like it is one thing, buying it because it's Japanese and you seen your favorite anime characters eat it is another.

    Interesting. I'm not much of either, but I'm more of an otaku.
