    The Twilight discussion taken further

The "Twilight series sucks" thread has inspired me to play a little game with you guys. Sure, many readers think Twilight is bad. Others, however, love its story and the way it is written.
I'll take the "Twilight sucks thread" one step further and I want to make an objective comparison. I think an opinion on Twilight can be elaborated best when comparing it to another writing style.
    I'll remain neutral here.

On the left side we have Stephenie Meyer, whose Twilight series have sold more than 40 million copies.
On the right side we have Eve Brondsningham, a relatively unknown author who hasn't sold 1000 copies of her work yet. The difference can hardly get any more significant, the only thing they have in common is that they are both relatively young writers.

This is from Stephenie Meyer's Twilight:
This is from the Eve Brondsningham's Cross:
Their content is loosely similar but at the very least comparable. They both lament on how the protagonist is different, elaborate either explicitly or intricately just how this is the case and imply the protagonists' respective self-loathing or at least self-criticism.
These excerpts are both from the beginning of the novel, meaning they both lack intensity and cannot be used as a reference for more intense paragraphs. However, to compare them both they will suffice.

Judging on content, originality, "intelligence" and other features, which of these writing styles do you think is better? As promised I will assume a neutral position.

hurr-durr, reading these makes me realise exactly why Meyer is so popular compared to other said unknown author. Teenagers (who probably mke up the vast majority of people who read the Twilight series) can more easily relate to Meyer's style of writing- it is not as complex or descriptive, the vocabulary is more simple, and it is almost "dumbed down" compred to Brondsningham's work- which the vast majority of people would probably refuse to read due to it being too "difficult".

Anyway, what Im trying to say- if two stories were the same, you're gonna want to read the less complicated version aren't you?

Although Brondsningham's work is beautifully written I'd chose Meyer as the better style.

Oh, and I do indeed like the Twilight series. Feel free to laugh at me if you wish, but whatever insults you have I can support Twilight.

Brodsningham. Meyer's is too ordinary and plain. It assumes the reader knows what a casual person should be like, and closely resembles that of any intelligent school child with a 6th grade English education. Brodsningham uses more visual abstraction, which I myself find more entertaining than the former writer's.

Brondsningham. Far more eloquent and insightful.

Definitely Brondsningham. Stephenie Meyer's is so dumb and boring, I could write better than that and I fail in English. Brondsningham makes a way better visual representation in my head, and I can understand in a better way, and it tells me so much more than Stephenie's could in a lot less words. Like said previously, it is at about a 6th grade level, I personally would put it more at a 4th grade level, but maybe that's just me.

I prefer Brondsningham. It seemed a bit poetic in some ways, Meyer's writing is rather informal. Brondsningham's writing was a bit vague, but it had me wanting to read more. Twilight did that to me too, but I think it was because of the flow of the story, not necessarily the writing itself.

I would say Stephenie Meyer. Now i don't want to hear bull crap about me liking her writing than the other writer. I just like how Twilight was actually able to make me see the story more while the other one i had trouble understand. Although it may be simple, if i'm reading for the hell of reading, i want to be entertained; and the only way i can do that is if I understand what's going on.

Wow you made a very crappy over used joke. The twihaters are so annoying and hypocritical. They say they are "grown up" because they don't read the books (which really can't make it a hate), but they act even more dumb than the twitards.

It's okay to like a sereis.
It's okay to not like a series.
It's fucking annoying to hear both sides whine about it all the time.

Fair enough (in retrospect, yeah, the joke was kind of in bad taste).

People do make a really big deal about the whole thing.

We whine because innocent people are being attacked for not expressing a favor for the series.

I've got the list for proof if you need.

This is like the damn obama/McCain debate; but not as annoying.

:D yay!! your awesome! i agree, though. most people can't read things they have to get dictionaries for. like: He -what- her -what- ?!!

    twilight is quite "dumbed down".

    Current status:
    Meyer - 15
    Brondsningham - 8

I don't think there's any need to wait for the tables to turn anymore.
In truth this "defeat" is more personal than I first let on. "Eve Brondsningham" is me and that writing is mine.
I lost and I take it with grace. I'm what you would call a twihater and I wanted to prove black on white that any dipshit could write up to Meyer's level. This backfired horribly and I'll admit that she's way out of my league.

It should be noted, however, that this excerpt is no representation of my typical writing style. A better example would have been this but it didn't really have any paragraphs that were comparable to the Twilight snippet I found. Just wanted to point that not everything I write reads like an LSD trip although I do intend to make "Cross" that which comes closest to my masterpiece.

I'll leave the poll open and won't request the thread to be locked. Just for kicks though; I don't expect any drastic changes. :D

    One more thing...
    Thanks guys.

I agree with you on that part.. but they took the whole concept of vampires to a whole new level. they sorta made him caring, but in another view, they made him a self-loving prat.

this is where I like the villans more. James, I think his name is.
the blonde one with no shirt ^^" his character was more intriguing.

I'm not a big fan of the Twilight series either. The movie was ok the first time, but the second time (3 months afterwards) it lost it's feel. I'll probably watch each movie once. But, as far as an overall rating, I say 2.5/5

I hated Twilight, but it wasn't because all the girls were so obsessed with it. I can tell you straight away, I'm not jealous...it was just the idea, it was not realistic. Vampires vs. vampires have not been introduced much in the world, or against werewolves. Vampires and werewolves needed something else to be hunted by, not each other. Plus, vampires were supposed to be dead, really, not diamond skin...that was really wierd.
So, change, was introduced in twilight alot, so thats why people didn't like it.

    Eragon series all the way.
