Today I learned that my grandfather was insane in his younger days.

My mother recently recounted a story about how during tornadoes her father, instead of taking everyone to the crawlspace in the basement like a sensible man, took everyone upstairs to the balcony so they could watch. Apparently that's why nobody on my mom's side of the family is afraid of storms.

A tornado went through my mom's back yard when she was young and her mom went outside to watch it, my mom went with her.

One time when there was a tornado in the area, my grandpa wanted us all to get in the family car to go find it. My mom said I couldn't go.

My Grandad was a racecar driver for a while in like the 80s and he once drove a race in a thunderstorm that caused all the other racers to slow down. Not him.

    Isn't that normal?
If not, it's normal here in Kansas at least.

    Your grandfather is a badass.
I live in Ohio. This state is scared all the way through Hell and into Tartarus of tornadoes.

My dad and I used to wait upstairs watching the storms until the last possible minute. I've only seen a tornado once and I was about eight. We had to hurry down to the basement when it was finally within sight.

Apparently when I was just a baby in Wisconsin there was an F5 Tornado that hit near my dad's work, and my whole family went outside and could see it from out house and just watched it

Wow. My life story is like a mix between all the above. My grandfather from Kansas was a racer when he was young, but quit to take care of his fam. Or maybe I'm getting the story wrong, it was either that or an incident with a roller coaster and a dare to switch seats that ended badly I'm not sure which was the factor in his quitting. ANYWAY. They moved away from Kansas before my mom was born. Years later, I guess there was a tornado going by my parent's apartment when I was a baby, and they stood on the porch to watch, holding me. Then I lived in Ohio for five years of my childhood, during which I saw a few tornado warnings, but never a tornado, and as a kid was absolutely terrified of the idea of a tornado. Before my mom told me about having seen a tornado as a baby, and that my grandfather from Kansas had survived an actual tornado himself when he was a kid.
