So you really think that the world will never, ever end? You must be delusional.

So you're saying that humans are the only ones who can observe? Funny, I thought that there were a lot of animals in the world. Guess I was wrong.

I say the world would be better off, not in such bad shape, if humanity didn't exist. Almost zero pollution, the trees wouldn't get cut down, etc. Honestly, i'd like to live in world without the rest of humanity for just five minutes. Imagine how clean the air would be, how beautiful the scenery would be, it would be a paradise.

Back to the original topic of the thread. Several schools in my local area have had threats of being blown-up. There are still parents willing to send their kids to school in spite of this. My child wouldn't be going anywhere near the place, if you ask me.

Unfortunately, this is extremely common after school shootings that get wide news coverage. It's mostly morons who want to get their 15-minutes in the limelight so they send threats/discuss 'plans' out in public, etc., but there are those who are already disturbed, see the attention the Sandy Hook shooter gets, and want to get that for themselves. There was a humongous number of school shooting threats in Finland after the Jokela-and Kauhajoki tragedies, soon after the first one in '07 the Swedish speaking middle school had a few girls threatening to shoot their teachers they didn't like, and the police picked them up for questioning. Turns out they just wanted to cause trouble. And a little before the first anniversary of the shooting, my sisters' middle school had somebody write down the date of the anniversary and something like "Prepare yourself to the rematch), and the teachers allowed anyone who wanted to to stay home that day (my parents didn't let my sisters go. I think one of them actually posted a thread about it here when it happened...) I dunno if they ever found the person who wrote it, but there was no shootings that day, at least.

It's the equivalent of a high school diploma that you can get if you dropped out of school at some point...

He is quoting something like converse-anthropic principle. Since humans have defined a concept of the world by themselves (it brings up the question of the degree of consciousness animals have) then the end of humans would be the end of the world by their perception, since the very perception would cease to exist. Concretely, of course, the world may still continue to exist.

If I recall correctly, there have been talks between both the Democrats and Republicans about gun control laws to prevent things like this. I am not quite sure to what degree though. And I am also wondering if only gun control laws instead of things like socioeconomic conditions or mental illness are the issue to tackle at the moment. Perhaps all three and more. Gun crime can have complicated backgrounds, and though one aspect may help, it may take multiple other approaches to get a very, very large decrease.

Perhaps you should skip school on that day if you feel that much anxiety. Perhaps with many others as well. At least until there is some sort of certified protection that is present. The police must already be aware. Although it has a possibility of being a simple hollow threat for attention (which it seems to be), I am not sure if taking the risk would be the best -- it is up to you in the end. But please stay safe, sir. Please.

And if it's because of the "end of the world" that they're making these threats, I was talking to my mom about it, and she said they're just using that as an excuse.

Not necessarily. I'm studying for my GED (currently on break, though), but I completed my four years at the high school. I just didn't get enough credits to graduate because I went part-time.

Is there an epidemic of school shooting threats sweeping the country? The same thing is happening at my school.

We' re already researching socioeconomic conditions and mental illnesses, but neither are exact sciences (yet). Burden of proof says hi.

When it comes to gun control however you' re not asked to re-invent the wheel, countries all around the world have already tried different gun control measures with satisfying results. That' s why I think the US should concentrate on that for now, it' s much easier and less speculative than trying to read minds or predict the future.

My only problem with gun control in the US that it would very difficult to enforce at this point. There are enough people who own very large gun collections. Do you know what happens to black market prices on something that becomes illegal? They go way up. And when prices go up, people become more willing to sell, even illegally.

And what happens to the people who own guns now if stricter gun control is approved? How long will they have to take whatever measures they need to to keep their guns legal? Will there be measures that they can take?

Overall, I'm okay with stricter gun control, but it'll be a while before it'll be effective. And what's the point of having a law if it doesn't do anything? You may as well outlaw alcohol even though people will just drink in secret anyway. Oh, wait.

    - Non-retroactive security measures are passed regularly for every goddamn product, I don' t really see what sets guns apart.
    - Slowly effective =/= ineffective.
