Now I know you've all heard about this movie. You all saw Iron Man, you all saw Incredible Hulk, you know what's going on. I'm sure you all know the story, you've all read the comics, blahblahblah. So you know the plan is to make individual films for (so far) Marvel's trinity, building up to a big Avengers film. So you know about the announced Thor movie and how it's set for release in 2011. Well there's been recent news lately, so I'll just provide an update for any interested. Kenneth Branagh is directing the film (you guys will know him as Gilderoy Lockheart from Chamber of Secrets). Joe Quesada and Brian Bendis have mentioned that they've had discussions with Branagh about the character and they're pretty excited with his attitude. They say he gets it. Which is good, because the introduction of Norse mythology to the Marvel film universe is going to be difficult for some people to get their heads around. And just the other day, the casting information for the two main characters was announced. Chris Hemsworth is in final talks to play the title character, Thor. He's an Australian actor, and his most recent role was that of George Kirk in Star Trek. No word on whether he'll play Donald Blake as well. And Tom Hiddleston is officially confirmed to play Loki. Branagh's worked with him in previous films and plays, and reportedly loves his work. So there you go. Our hero and villian have been announced. What do you think?
Hemsworth looks like Thor, lol. To be honest though Thor is the only marvel hero I know nothing about, so it should be interesting to say the least... I do hope they make it good. Almost every first marvel hero movie has been good, so if they continue like that, I think Thor would be pretty decent. Not Oscar worthy or great, just something worth watching.
If you have any interest in superhero comics at all, you should seek to rectify this immediately. Go to your nearest Borders, and look in the "lol graphic novels" section and look for Thor. The most recent series has been fantastic. The writer is J. Michael Stracynzski (guy created Babylon 5), and it's only around 15 issues in so far, but the paperbacks collect all the issues so you'll be fine. Look for a Thor book written by Matt Fraction, he wrote a series of one-shots that were just amazing and I recently read a 4 issue mini-series about Loki that was just beautiful. Honestly, Thor as a Marvel comics film probably won't be what you expect it to be, and that's what I love about it. So if you are interested, you should try to look into it just so the movie doesn't leave you wondering what the ****. or ya know, you could just ignore all that and Wiki Thor Marvel comics.
Kenneth Branagh is directing this? Hmm, wonder if I should be expecting another four hour long epic now... Anyways, this sound interesting enough, I always liked Viking mythology. Now excuse me, I'm gonna go get my hands on the comics.
I hope this movie goes in the way of Iron Man, Ghost Rider (though I felt the fight scenes were too rushed) and the second Hulk movie because they were really great.. and not in the way of Daredevil or Spiderman 3 and X-Men 3 because they were awful to me. If it does go well, I will be very happy as Thor was one of my favorite Marvel characters, growing up. I haven't really read any comics in a while but I've really enjoyed some of the films.
Ghostrider had so much potential...but it did NOT fulfill it. I actually liked X-Men 3, but it could definitely have been better. Spiderman 3 was also pretty good, but I was dissatisfied at the way they handled Venom and even Blacksuit Spiderman
Ghost Rider wasn't bad to me. It just wasn't as good as it could have been. They should have put more fighting in it but I guess the special effects costed too much or something. I could forgive that though for the most part as it had some things in it that were alright and it also in its way ended up having all 3 of the main Ghost Riders in it. I did hope for more too but the film just didn't get the budget it should have. As for this movie, it seems to focus on Thor's origins, in the comic books anyway with Donald Blake. However, if they actually go to Asgard and stuff, I ponder if it's also going to have a lot of special effects that will make it cut corners. I hope not though. They seem to have been putting a lot into the other Avenger member movies. The only Avenger movie I really am not interested in would be Ant Man. Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne were always kind of the meh boring Avengers compared to others.
Usually, in a **** movie, more fights make it worse. Some comic book properties don't need to be made into films. Back to topic on Thor, I'd like to see the movie take place entirely in Asgard. Starting off with Donald Blake wouldn't make sense. So you start in Asgard, build the rivalry of Loki and Thor and then get Loki to **** Thor over and have him banished. Thor ends up on Earth in form of Donald Blake, yadda yadda.
Ok, so there's been more casting news: Natalie Portman is playing Jane Foster (aka the love interest of Donald Blake/Thor). Anthony Hopkins is confirmed to play the lead Norse god, Odin. Jaimie Alexander is playing the beautiful Norse god, Sif. Ray Stevenson is playing Volstagg the Valiant. Tadanobu Asano is playing Hogun the Grim. and Stuart Townsend is playing Fandral, rounding out the Warriors Three. Samuel Jackson is also reprising the role of Nick Fury. Colm Feore and Stellen Skarsgard have also mentioned that they've been cast, but their roles are unknown.
