I just realised they jazzed up Auld Lang Syne near the beginning.

I never liked Tom and Jerry as a kid. It wasn't even licensed as a kids' show. It was a show for adults that just ended up being more popular with kids. Just like Looney Tunes, in fact.

It was made for the adults when they were kids, and they loved it then. We grew up in different cultures, and as such have developed different tastes.

    It was extremely obvious.

And yet they've both been through much, much worse than getting hit by trains.[DOUBLEPOST=1358839294][/DOUBLEPOST]
Really? I like it much better now as a somewhat childish young adult than I did ten years ago as an extremely childish nine-year-old. I thought it was one of those things that was supposed to take a certain amount of maturity to get in the "right" way, but kids still liked it for the obvious slapstick comedy. Like it was made for my grandma, but was more loved by my mother.

I fail to see what that has to do with anything.

But it's you I'm talking to, I won't waste my time arguing with you.

If they can survive everything else that they've been through, how the hell would they be killed by a train? They obviously survived and had to deal with their loneliness just like everybody else.

This wasn't even the last episode or anything, so they didn't actually die. They never died, it was always just a silly gag.

Unless the episodes are told in anachronic order, that is.

And that means the whole point of this thread is gone because the fact that they killed themselves was the whole point of the thread, wasn't it?

Or maybe the writers were trying to do something a bit more serious. I mean, look at it. These two have been enemies all their lives, and yet they sit together in their final moments of life, realizing that fighting each other was a wasted effort, because no matter who or what we are, we all have emotions and share similar wants and passions.

And Tom and Jerry episodes can be seen as one shot story collections. I mean, I don't remember something happening in one that was carried over or affected another episode.

    Well...

That was the real point. The fact that a cartoon was this dark. Kids wouldn't be able to understand it, and when they finally learned the significance, some would be left with a mentally traumatizing feeling.

But lots of cartoons that I loved as a kid were very dark and it didn't change anything when I finally noticed it. I realized about a year ago that Spongebob lives in a fruit, his only coworker hates him, his best friend only likes him because he's a moron, and he makes less than minimum wage at a job where his life is at risk every single day because his boss's business rival is an evil genius, but that didn't ruin any of the great memories I have of it as a kid.

I don't even have any childhood memories of Tom and Jerry, so it's not like I have anything to be ruined anyway.
