Hospitals filled to the brim, the patients all having some sickness never seen before. Some question if it's even an infection rather than a curse as those who should be dead rose once more. These people - or rather- these things spread their disease and ate the living. In an attempt to save everyone refugee camps were set up and evacuation orders were given.
Portland, Oregon was no different. The streets and highways became cramped with cars, all trying to leave the city. Some scared for their lives, others thinking that the threat would pass soon. All having no real idea just what waited for them in the future.
Soon after the city had been mostly cleared helicopters flew in. 'Bomb the streets.' That was the gist of their orders. Even if some had lingered behind, unable or unwilling to leave their homes they were to bomb the streets. Though with the army so thinned out they had to wonder if even this would be enough as it seemed hell had been unleashed on the world. Or worse - the gods had done this, leaving no one to save them.

The starting location for this rp is Portland, Oregon. It is expected for most to be on the highway leading away from the city, though as it is so filled no one can even drive through it most have exited their cars to talk to others. If you've watched the show this is very similar to how Lori and Shane were in the beginning of the outbreak. On the radios there's a broadcast on every channel that repeats the same thing over and over, to remain calm and head to a refuge camp which is near the city. However it will soon cut off. If you can see the city still you can witness the bombings.
Another choice for a starting point is to be someone who refused or was unable to leave the city or a solider trying to save said people or fighting off walkers. By morning the troops there would have fallen and will lose radio commutations right after being given orders of retreat. It's your choice to stay in the city though it would be highly unsafe here.
You could form a group, join an already existing one, or brave the world on your own.

[ooc; I made this a bit long, but feel no need to match it's length. I was mostly trying to get the setting down and also am in just a mood to write.]
"Please remain calm," the male voice on the radio repeated for the twentieth time, as if such an act was possible, "and exit the city. Help is on the way."
Tapping her fingers on the steering wheel was a black haired female who was noticeably agitated and even cursed under her breath several times, with most directed at the radio. Even if it was a recorded message she wished it would die, although it proved impossible for her to turn it off. Because what if something new started playing? Missing it would only prove bad.
However the voice was soon replaced with static which caused the girl to slam her hand on the dash. "Damn it!" No longer able to stand the noise she shut it off and exited her silver sedan. If only her father were here, surely he would have something to say to make this whole mess seem nothing more than a bad dream.
But it wasn't a dream. Those people really did try to eat her, and only after their heads were chopped off did they stop moving. But not completely, no, their mouths still growled and their eyes still watched her movements. Stabbing it through the skull was the only way to make it truly perish.
Shivering from the memory, and perhaps also the cool breeze, she looked around and noticed several others had also stepped out of their vehicles. Some talked to others while the rest just stayed quiet, sitting on their hoods or idly walking about. Did those calm looking ones have no idea what really going on? Or did they expect this to happen? A horror movie come to life. "I bet some wished for that," she uttered, shivering still.
If only this traffic would disappear and they could all just go home like none of this ever happened. But that seemed like nothing more than a hopeless wish, one that will never be granted.

He expected it to get this bad when the evacuation was called. Until today, he didn't fully believe it. The reports, the cases he had been called to investigate, and the people he had gunned down had all been obvious warnings that he had chosen to ignore. They had just been cannibals...or people who were sick and dangerous...they couldn't be unkillable flesh-eating beasts. No amount of training could have prepared him for this and nothing he had learned while on the Force could apply to what had just happened.

'Aim for the head. That's the report we got.' He touched the barrel of his pistol, now cold due to the weather. Noah had done his best getting as many people as he could out of their houses but some just refused to leave. Whether he wanted to or not, he couldn't just stay behind and help everyone. Dying without reaching his brother and sister was not an option. Noah looked at the radio, raising an eyebrow when all he heard was static. How long had it been like that? He had been too busy thinking to notice that the warnings had stopped.

He turned the radio off and placed his pistol back into its holster. Noah left his car and locked the door behind him. He looked down the line of cars behind his own. "I don't see how my badge is going to help anyone here." He muttered under his breath, deciding to leave the families still in their vehicles to themselves. Noah walked along the traffic, passing several people who had stepped out of their cars. "Nobody's going anywhere soon. Just try to stay warm for now and get back in your vehicles." 'Can't have people running around and looting each other either.' He added silently.

Leila sat impatiently in the driver's seat. Everyone was supposed to be evacuating, but she was doing the opposite. She was trying to get back into the city. The freeway was completely jammed on this side as well, no doubt people intending to do the same as her-- find their families. She couldn't just leave them there, trapped in Portland with...what was awaiting her in Portland? The information distributed by the media was still rather vague at best. Cannibals? We're fleeing from some freaks that decided they want to be cannibals? Leila sat their angrily tapping away at the steering wheel. When did the radio go out? How long had she not noticed the infernal sound of static? The same announcement had been playing over and over again, all day. By now, Leila had the words recited to memory.

She pulled her phone out from within her sweatshirt pocket. The phone lines had been jammed all day, too many people calling their loved ones. Leila clicked the speed dial, trying to reach her mother. No good. Just that annoying automated female voice saying the lines were busy and to try the call again. Will I ever get through?

She tossed her phone into the passanger seat and put the car in park. The cars hadn't moved in roughly twenty minutes, some people were even getting out of their vehicles and walking around. That seems smart, she thought sarcastically. Let's all walk around on the freeway. It's not like they were going to get a better view of the road ahead. She had seen how backed up the way out of the city was as approached Portland. Leila still had a good few miles before even coming close to the Portland exit. What's going to happen if I don't make it there soon?

"If no one's going anywhere soon why even bother getting back in our cars?" With this man barking orders around as if there was still order left bugged the hell out of her. That and she never did take well to being told what to do. Only when her father told her to run did she listen without question, being too scared at the time to do so. And even though she was still frightened her emotions were running wild. To control that, or at least to look like she had them under control, her natural reaction was to basically lash out at anyone talking.
These worries would soon be pushed to the back of her mind though, as helicopter flew overhead. She even smiled, wondering if this was the help that the man had spoke about on the radio. But this smile would not last long as they simply kept going, ignoring her and everyone else's existence.
"What's this..." Before she could even finish it the question was answered.
From the uphill location they found themselves in the city was in perfect view when the bombs began to drop. One after another. And the darkness was lit up by fire. And though it was impossible Victoria felt like she could hear screaming from the city, though soon realized they were just in her head.
"No!" Without another thought she began walking towards the city, unsure of what she could even do but knew that her father was still in there. And even if she disliked her mother she did not wish for her to die. So she had to do something, right? So she walked, stumbling through the cars and people, slower than a walker with broken legs but still somehow moving.

As Zane carefully and quietly made his way through the highway crowded by abandon cars, he thought about what his options were at this point. The recorded voice on the radio continued to remind him of evacuation, but that my not be an easy feat at the moment especially since all he had on him at the moment was a guitar that he'd gotten from the shop he'd worked at. There was the possibility that he could find others trapped in the city like him and he could form a group. Let's save that for plan B. That was about when he noticed the helicopter flying above and what happened after.

The city was being bombed by the passing helicopter. Was this their idea of help, or was this there way of showing them that this is what the situation's come to. Either way he couldn't stop himself from continuing on towards the city.

Leila was nervously biting at her nails when she heard the helicopters fly overhead. Help was coming, but she didn't understand what kind of help the people of Portland would need. The wasn't time to ponder that thought. The bombs started dropping to quickly, one after another. Her face was a frozen image of shock and terror. The fires reflected in her eyes and tears pooled over. She wanted to scream, run, believe that this was just a horrible nightmare, but her body wouldn't do anything. Leila's limbs went numb and she could hear her blood pounding in her ears. "what...?"

Her voice was a cracked whisper. She fumbled for the lock on the door and stumbled out of the car, the engine still running. Leila tripped over a shoe lace and had to use the handle on the door to pull herself up. The tears were flowing steadily and her eyes quickly became red and puffy. "I...they're...they're gone..." She slowly moved to the other side of the freeway, drawn to the bombings like a moth to a flame. Her family was just gone, for no reason. It was't fair.

"I'm just trying to-" Then the girl who spoke to him headed off towards the helicopters. It wasn't a pretty sight. "This is why they wanted us out of the city." Noah spoke up as he approached Victoria, feeling as if he was watching a scene out of a movie. A terrible one. He took in a deep breath and pressed a hand to his heart as if trying to keep it from bursting out. "Are you alone?" He asked, hoping the answer would be "no". There was nothing they could do for those who remained in the city, all that was left was what was right beside you.

Noah looked over towards the others who were watching the destruction of their home. He could only hope that things weren't this bad where his brother and sister were. "Come on, looking at it won't do you any good." He added in towards the girl, hoping to get her attention off the fiery scene.

    OOC: Short post is short.

Victoria shook her head restlessly for a few moments, as if that alone would change the scene before her. Only when she began to feel dizzy did she stop, covering her mouth in horror. They're probably dead by now, huh? If the monsters didn't get them then those bombs sure did. There was just no way they could have gotten through that, huh?
    "Yeah...yeah I'm alone."
Now in tears she nearly fell over, unsure of what to do now. They were dead. They had to be dead now. Everyone was dead.
Wait...Elizabeth... Was her dear sister suffering the same fate? Turning to the male who had spoken to her she expected him to know for some unexplainable reason, probably because she had no one else to talk to. But instead of asking for her sister she said something else. "What do we do now then? You seem to know everything, so what now? Are we just supposed to wait in traffic, hoping help gets to us before those freaks do?"

Zane turned his head from the scene before him. There was no point of continuing to look at burning city, since there was no way to change what had happened. In that one instant everything in the city was obliterated, whether it was still human or not. That was when he overheard the conversation behind him and turned around to see who was speaking. Just as he was turning around he'd manage to catch the question the girl asked. Staying here was out of the question and that just left heading to the opposite direction, but the question was to where exactly.

Leila stood helplessly in the grassy median. The two lanes of traffic were separated by about twenty feet and littered with countless other shocked survivors. She pointlessly searched the windows of cars for a familiar face, just one person she could recognize. What was the possibility her family made it out, that they were in one of those cars headed out of the city? She could have passed them on the road. Leila was driving into the danger while they might have been evading it. There were told to evacuate after all.

She had barely managed to focus on anything but the raging fire. Now, there was a micro sliver of hope tugging at her chest, the possibility that her family was alive. The only way I'll know is if I search.

She stumbled across and moved through the rows of cars at a rapid pace, trying to see the people inside. It would take her forever to search them all and they could be gone by the time she finds the right vehicle-- if she finds the right vehicle. Her family was under the impression that she was at school, they could go looking for her there and discover she's gone. Then what would happen? What if her family was headed to see her?

I should go back. Back to my car and back to campus. The vehicles still weren't moving, however, so turning the car around wasn't going to do much good. How am I going to get back there?

"Detective Wyatt...or at least, I was it seems." He looked over towards the flames in the city. "There were a strange cases I had to deal with before this all blew up. Not too long before the evacuation was ordered did I find out what we were dealing with. So no, I don't know much more than you about these things." Noah crossed his arms and kicked at the ground. "It's better not to stay alone." He added in as he turned his attention towards the stopped traffic, watching as a girl quickly moved through the rows.

"Call me Noah anyways. What's your-" A window shattered nearby as people began to shout. Noah immediately took off towards the cars, his hand already on his pistol. It wasn't one of them but rather it was a mugging. Noah slowed down once he neared the scene, watching as a man forced a family out of their car, aiming his own gun at them. From the looks of it, the family did have a lot stockpiled in their vehicle.

Noah drew his gun. "All right buddy, put the gun down nice and easy." The man stopped sifting through the goods in the car and looked over at Noah. Then he took off, dropping his gun in the process. Noah would have fired, but now that the thief was unarmed, he couldn't put a bullet in the man's back in good conscience. He breathed deeply and reached for the gun before noticing something odd about it. 'Just a repainted toy.'

Though it all happened quickly, Noah and the family gathered the attention of the others on the road. "Nothing to see here."

Leila stopped the windows of cars at the sound of shouting. She turned around just in time to have some guy run into her and keep going. She landed on the ground, between the rows of cars. The asphalt scraped her hands as she tried to brace her impact. Her palms had trace amounts of blood on them and a few micro pebbles imbedded into the cuts. "ow. What a jerk." She wiped her hands off on her pants and pulled herself up.

Everyone was staring at some cop helping a family. Leila pursed her lips and stared across the road at her own vehicle. There was no way she would get it free, at least not until the traffic cleared. She sighed and began to make her way back across the median. She would wait in her car for the others to disperse and continue trying to call her parents.
    maybe the lines will reopen.

It was a foolish thought. Obviously the phone lines would only become more jammed now. Leila bit her lip nervously as she stepped over a broken tail light. Someone must have been in an accident recently.

Gwen's lips pressed tightly together as she averted her gaze away from the city as it was being bombed. She could barely remember how everything led to where she was now; it all just happened far too quickly. Her father had been working when the break out happened, but she was lucky enough to find him. She sat in the passenger seat of her father's squad car, as her father switched to different radio stations only to hear the repeated static noise. Hearing him curse, Gwen turned her attention towards her father, seeing him clutching tightly at the wheel. She wasn't sure what to say; what could she say? Everything is going to be alright? No. She knew very well things were not going to be alright.

Sighing lowly, Gwen played with the pocket knife in her hand. She wanted a gun, even though she can't really work one. She always wanted one, however, her father believed she would only hurt herself. The usual thought her father had on a lot of things.

Hearing the car door open, the young girl turned her attention towards the driver's seat, seeing her father step out of the car. Confused, Gwen stepped out as well before hearing some sort of commotion ahead; hearing the shouting, her body tensed up and she quickly made her way towards her father, afraid it might be one of those things. "It's nothing. Don't worry," she heard her father say. Inhaling deeply, she watched him reach for his gun, figuring he didn't think it was "nothing." Then again, she couldn't blame him; the way things were now, they were both paranoid. Hearing the commotion stop, Gwen turned away from her father and took a couple of steps ahead of the car, chewing on her lip lightly as she tried looking ahead of the highway.

Victoria listened as the man spoke, repeating his name in her head. A detective, huh? And even if he claimed not to know much he seemed to have dealt with those things more than her, so she did feel a little safer now. Perhaps she could stay with him? He even said it was best not to be alone, as if he was offering to team up. Anything seemed to be better than being alone now.
But as she was going to introduce herself a noise was heard and he went off. Jumping at the sound she found herself moving back to her car without thought. But inside of getting in to hide, she went for a backpack she hastily packed eariler and her father's sword. Or rather, her sword. If it was them she had to be ready to go.
Luckily it turned out to be only a mugger by the looks of it. A relieved sigh escaped her and she almost returned her things to the passenger's seat. However, before she could, something happened.
First there was a scream. Then more. It came from down the line and soon after it people began rushing past her, running away from whatever caused the screaming. It was too far away to see it at first, but judging by the sounds it came from the direction of the city so Victoria had a good guess.
Biting her lip she began backing up, getting bumped into every few seconds. How many of them were there down there? By the sounds of it there had to be several. And this proved to be true moments later as about five came into view, more probably on their way. If they weren't busy eating that is.
Instead of helping others she turned to run, wishing only to get far away from there.

Leila had just reached her car when the screaming started. Her hand was on the door and she was about to get in. The screaming drew her attention back towards the firey city and the people that were slowly walking away from it. Others were running in fear, tripping over each other, and stumbling between rows of scars. What was happening? She didn't understand why they were running from the other people, until one was attacked. It launched itself at some poor woman and started ripping her to pieces as she screamed in agony.

Was this what the government was afraid of? They were obviously the cannibals, but no one bombs and entire city over cannibals. There was something off about them. The slow manner to which they moved, the lifeless look in their eyes, the loud moans escaping their lips, and their tattered, worn attire. There were countless movies and books about things like this. Could they really be just like all the stories?

Leila developed a whole new sense of panic. She prayed her family was okay, but hoped they suffered the horrible fate of the bombing over those creatures down the road. She never feared scraping her hands so badly before, remembering how she rubbed the blood off onto her clothes. Leila fumbled with her keys, trying to pop open the trunk, and grabbed her softball bag. If these things were really like the stories, she would need her bats. Tears flooded out her eyes and stained her cheeks as she threw the duffle bag over her shoulder and grabbed her purse out of the backseat, shoving it inside the bag. She realized now how her car would probably never leave it's current location and turned away from it, running in the same direction as everyone else.

Gwen felt her heart drop as screams filled the area; people ran further down the highway as she looked around to only see what they were running from. She instantly grabbed her father's arm as she took a step back, preparing herself to run. However, she immediately heard a gun fire, causing her to see her father was the one firing. "D-Dad!" She took a step back as she turned her attention ahead of her. She wanted to run but she could not leave her father. Not like she would even dare to. She lowered her gaze before feeling her hand be pulled, causing her to look up and see her father running ahead of her. She squeezed tightly at his hand as she picked up her pace behind him.

Her father stopped suddenly, causing Gwen to bump into him from behind. She looked up as her lips parted so she could speak, however, she felt her hand be grabbed and something rather heavy and cold be placed into it. She could already feel what the object was and she was rather hesitant to even look down to see what it was. Lowering her gaze slowly, she felt a whimper escape her lips as she quickly looked up at her father.

"I want you to run, Gwen. Run as fast as you can."

"No! I'm not leaving you, Daddy."

    "I love you, Gwen. Run."

Her father suddenly took off towards his squad car as Gwen squeezed tightly at the gun in her hand. She wasn't sure what he was doing, and she wanted to follow after him; however, something deep down told her to just run. She could still hear people screaming and see people running, and soon enough she began to hear gunshots. Without another thought, Gwen took off running, refusing the urge to look back to see if her father was still alive or being eaten by one of those things. She felt tears run down her cheeks as her breathing became heavy, gripping the handgun and pocketknife tighter.

Noah immediately headed back to his own car, ignoring the thanks of the family he had just helped out. Upon hearing the screams, they soon realized what was coming. Though everything he had in his car would be considered "emergency supplies", he did pack a backpack full of stuff with an...emergency "emergency pack". He couldn't carry everything.

"Take whatever food you can and leave your cars!" He shouted. 'That doesn't look good.' For awhile he thought about trying to hold them off. Though it didn't take long for him to come to the conclusion that it would be a waste of ammo. Noah moved behind a car to avoid being trampled on by the people who ran past him. He hated not having any kind of control over the situation. He just had to run. So he did, hoping everyone who didn't react quickly would leave their cars before it was too late.

With all the cars around, it was difficult to maneuver and the growing crowd only made things worse. Leaving the highway seemed to be the best option, but getting more to follow would be impossible. Not everyone could follow one path. If everyone went the same way the situation wouldn't change anyways. Noah hopped over the rails. Several followed suit, thinking the same thing. The woods were starting to look awfully comfortable now...

The roads became cramped with people, all pushing others out of their way or falling over. The cars did little to help the issue, only making things that much harder.
Realizing that at this rate it would soon become impossible to get through the masses Victoria stopped and began looking around. That is when she noticed Wyatt jump into the woods, away from the rush of things. It seemed like the smart option and, as she saw him as someone who knew more still, the right thing to do. So following suit she soon made her way to the rail, climbing over a car to do so, and landed in the grass. Others had the same idea but for the most part this area was a lot more open. There were just trees to go through now, but at least they did not shove you aside.
Making her way through then the girl stumbled over roots, picking herself up every time. For no matter how much she hurt she knew that stopping was simply not an option. Only did the screams became distant did she begin to slow down, catching her breath and getting a look around. Seems like nothing but trees, maybe some people near by, but so far she seemed clear of those freaks.
    "What a day..."

Gwen felt her chest begin to burn as she continued trying to run as fast as she could. She was beginning to feel as though it was just her time to "go." Then again, she didn't want to go by being eaten by the dead. Slipping, she fell onto her side in front of a car as everyone continued running, screaming from fear or from being eaten themselves. Wheezing, she looked around the area to see several people make their way towards the woods. She wasn't sure if it was a good idea, or a bad one. It was dark, yes, but there was also the chance there were zombies in the woods.

It felt like an eternity as she debated whether to continue on the highway or follow those that went into the woods. She heard a sudden thud beside her and as she turned her attention, she saw another one of those things gnawing away at a man. Whimpering loudly, Gwen quickly rose to her feet as she took off towards the railing, climbing over it and heading off into the woods. She briefly looked over her shoulder, watching as the highway grew further away, along with the screaming.

Her pace began to slow down as she made her way through the woods; She was beginning to feel safe, however, she was alone, and the fear of dying alone was coming up. Gwen inhaled deeply as she momentarily closed her eyes. Opening them, she saw a rather built figure and before she could stop, she rammed into the person. Yelping, Gwen fell on her back, dropping the handgun and pocketknife. "O-Ow..." She pressed her elbows against the damp soil and looked up, seeing a grown man standing in front of her.
