A question I have always wanted to know! If the Universe is everything then what the hell is it expanding into? I mean we get told the Universe is expanding outwards but how does it do that if there is nothing beyond it for it to expand into

That's easy. The universe is, indeed, everything. But you have to think of the universe as something more like thought.

Something like the internet for example is a universe in itself, and it's constantly expanding. Expanding into what you say? Well, something like thought or the universe is so massive and so surreal that it's immpossible to measure. Because it doesn't truly "exist". Thought, or the universe, is but isn't. And therefore it expands into nothing, because it is in nothing, and it is nothing.

Ah yes but for something to be classified as nothing it must still be something! For Nothing is still defined as existing there can never be a true absence in existence. For example all major creation stories say"in the beginning there was nothing" but surely there has to be something for nothing to have any real meaning! (Erm if that makes any sense to any one other than me!!)

If thinking of the Universe as thought was all it took it would be easy but by attributing the universe with a "real" existence then it must follow "real" rules. And if nothing is nothing then how can we exist? For nothing is pure absence which would surely include us??

If light and darkness are eternal...then surely we nothings must be the same: eternal.

eh....Sorry, I don't really know. I think the universe is just everything, aliens and all.

I agree except the alien part, maybe the universe is expanding to an eternal space. Space that is infinite, Space that grows every second!

You don't believe in aliens, eh? Now I'm not talking of the "take me to your leader" type but you honestly think that Earth is the only planet in the entire universe that has life?

I just wish the universe would expand and we'll have 9 planets again, and the other one's close to the earth, has also living matter and does not want to destroy the human race

The universe is interesting, but there are some scary facts.

I need to remember what they were first, I think something about a reverse big bang?

there are many theories how the universe was made, they say it was made by a big bang, others say it started small and grew and grew

Well the Universe is expanding, as humans discover more of it. Sort of like how we discover more webpages on the internet each time.

As for the aliens, sub-topic, I'll say a well known line from Contact:

'If we're alone, that's a lot of wasted space.'

I'm not saying there are aliens and I'm not saying there aren't. Just like to keep the possibility out there.

I kinda like the way the Universe keeps being compared with the internet and I guess it kinda makes sense but idk can it really be the same? Plus theres the whole big bang big crunch theory that one day the Universe will reach its limit and come flying back together. Plus I guess htere is evidence for expansion as in some of the stars can be seen moving backwards (erm I think it's blue stars that are moving away is that right??) but isnt that just the objects within the Universe moving or is it the universe expanding! OMLife Ive just confused the hell out of me! So sorry to anyone else who reads my ramblings! :D

On the whole aliens matter which keeps coming up I agree with Saix I'm not saying there is life out there and I'm not saying there isn't but you know I think it is very possible!

Just one of those questions that this generation will never answer.

Or any in the next 1000 years, for that matter.

My idea is a lot like the one in MiB when you see the alien with the little marbles representing the galaxies. Except they are universes, in my view.

    Weird.

    Of Course there is life.

There are cyanobacteria recovered from meteorites when they hit earth. Clearly showing that there is life from whereever that meteor may have come from.

'Course, that's merely a guess on the last statement.

Hmm I quite like that idea! I wonder if they'll find an answer even in another 1000 years, but hey life would be boring if we didn't have things like this to question :D

True there is evidence, like the fossils on mars etc etc, what I am not fully a believer of is the whole concept of little green men with ray guns. There has to be life I just don't think it's the kinda life from science fiction :D

    Umm....

    The number 43???

My friend told me that...it was from some movie she saw...

The universe is simply the universe. It is everything.

I don't think humans were meant to understand anything but earth, because we can understand only what we have seen or heard or experienced. We can understand that the universe exists, but we don't know how big it is. Or whether it even has a size.

That's the problem. We try to put everything into measurements; while some things simply cannot be measured.

    I'm sorry; I feel philosophical tonight. :)
