"Xane... the U.P.A.'s dug in for defense. They had big guns, and they were shootin' big bullets," Vecked replied, catching his breath...

 

"If you say so," Xane shrugged, sitting down next to Melloda. "I just thought you'd have enough power to take them out."

 

"Well, unfortunately I can't face the greatest god damn army to date that easily," Vecked muttered, popping a pill in his mouth. "Are we being followed?"

 

"No," the Pilot answered. "We've got AirTanks giving all of our cruiser ships heavy aerial support. "We'll suffer no problems getting out of here."


"I'm just sayin'," Xane continued. "If we can't beat an army, how can we beat the Brotherhood?"


"You don't think we'll win?" Mellodia asked.


"What? No, I'm not sayin' that," Xane said. "I mean, we gotta shape up if we wanna win this thing."

 

"I couldn't care less about the Brotherhood going down," Vecked replied, popping a few more pills. His hand was twitching, his heart was racing. "Our goal is for the Virus to go down. Let the Brotherhood do whatever it is they are doing, I don't care..."

 

Xardius was chuckling to himself. Greatest army in the world? Really? Maybe, maybe... His hand was clenching around his sword hilt so hard it hurt. After. It'll be after. Kanata. After.

"I'm here," Xardius snarled. "Or I'm coming..."

Highwind and Dyran sprinted out of the caves. Highwind had time to yell a warning before the U.O. forces opened fire, pouring bullets towards the two. Both futiley tried to dodge but Dyran knew they wouldn't have time to dodge.

The bullets collided with a solid wall of nothing, shattering against it as Enigma stepped from some nearby trees. The wall seemed to glisten as the bullets crashed to the ground.

Dyran helped Highwind to his feet. "Why are you helping us?"

Enigma shrugged, his face betraying nothing. "Get out while you can. This world is about to get a drastic population decrease."

"What do you mean?" Highwind choked. "I've got men down here!"

"Tyre got through to some ships, and the only remaining forces here are small remnants of the Larenskan army who refused to leave, and U.O. forces," Enigma droned. "There's a ship near the clearing. Get in it and get out."

Dyran frowned. "What about you?"

"I am going to stay here and kill U.O," Enigma said darkly. "I have to stay here to make sure the locals survive."

Behind him, Dyran finally acknowledged that he was hearing the screams of dying men. Twisting, he stared at what he saw. The wall had turned into a wheel of buzz saws, or so it seemed, for the U.O. people were simply exploding as the wall advanced.

Dyran nearly lost his lunch. "What are you!?" he screamed at Enigma.

Enigma was silent for a moment, then murmured under his breath. "I'm not sure." Louder. "Get out while you can. In 3 minutes, I won't contain myself."

"Enigma," Highwind said, "don't you realize? Somehow, there will be minimum casualties. Somehow, they will have all pulled out. You won't kill anyone but the people on this world! You can't stop the U.O. like this!"

Enigma smiled, and Dyran stepped back, quite sure he liked Enigma's bland expression a lot better.

"My dear fellow," Enigma said grimly through his smile, "what made you ever think I wanted it otherwise?"

"What is he doing?" Mordeth snarled. "Is he trying to ruin our alliance?"

"No," Scourge said. "He's trying to provoke me. But I don't know why."

Scourge tapped his lips. "Go find them, Mordeth. Do not fail me this time. I want them dead."

Mordeth smiled grimly. "I'll kill them all this time."

Scourge settled back in his chair, and chuckled to himself as Mordeth disappeared into the shadows.

OOC: It seems an iminent battle with Mordeth is dawning...and what is Enigma doing!?

 

"Uh, what the hell are you doing?" Xane asked, noticing Vecked's twitchiness. "You won't be of any use to anyone if you're all OD'd on those pills."

 

OOC: Where is everyone!? (I am whining)

 

OOC: Stop it, then. I'm back.

 

OOC: Well...great. But now what!?

BIC: Xardius approached Xane. "Let him take his pills. When he ends up looking like a druggie..."

He shrugged. "So now what?"

 

"Head to Kanata, I guess," Xane shrugged. "To regroup at least."

OOC: Also, is the battle with Mordeth going to be THE battle with Mordeth, or what?

 

"Fine," Xardius said. Ignoring Vecked, he asked, "What do you think of the U.O?"

OOC: Yup. The battle. But it won't be easy.

 

"War isn't kind..." Vecked muttered, watching as his hand slowly calmed down. "The effects of it show. My trigger finger has itched like this for around four years now..."

Vecked sighed, "Maybe I wasn't meant for this... the hell am I saying? No human is meant for this..."

Vecked's hand began twitching again. "You wanna know something? You and your UO always talking about friendship, how your friends are the most important people and all this crap..."

Vecked popped another pill. "I really don't like you guys, your precious little organization... all of you laughing, smiling, thinking you know each other so well... you don't even know each other. Can anyone describe Nulix? Other than the fact that he was a goofy guy who sucked in battle and only had decent aim? No... none of you can? You know he wanted to direct films, right? Up in Destiny Islands? He then decided that he wanted to be a business man first, cause the world isn't kind to artists... after he was rich, then he would make film..."

Vecked sighed. "He was smart... the smarter of the two Princeton Brothers... god forgive me..."

Vecked looked down. He was dizzy. The Pills, maybe. He was angry. There had been a feeling in him that he could run. But Cotaxus' words were true. The world was getting smaller and smaller. The U.O. had every system under lock. No one could hide them anymore. Even a drug gang like the Bronss was under the control of the U.O. This made Vecked angry. He was angry because he was afraid. Afraid that there was nowhere for him.

Vecked closed his eyes, "I'm afraid to die."


OOC: Sorry for Vecked's random emotional moment. I figure I need to segway an emotional character development situation before the craziness starts...

 

Wing dropped down into the ship with Xane, Xardius and Vecked as Vecked began his speech about the UO and Nulix. He knew that Nulix wanted to be an artist. He knew Nulix was different, and very smart...he was the brains behind Wing becoming the leader of the UO all those years ago, he was behind him every step of the way, in every battle, in the down times. God how he missed him. How he longed to talk to him one more time....before it was all over.

Wing took a seat silently. He knew that the others could feel him there....but he wasnt ready to talk. He was still digesting the mission he was on now and the letters in his pocket seemed to weight a million pounds. How would he know if he had to deliver them?

"guess if I never see them again...that'll be a good time..."

He glanced over his shoulder at Xardius and felt a smile slowly cross his lips.

"Glad you're okay old friend. I couldn't do this without you..." He said under his breath, though he knew Xardius heard him loud and clear.

 

Xardius looked at Wing over his shoulder and nodded, but didn't say anything.

Why did I come back? he wondered. For this? It's not enough for me anymore...

Aloud, he said, "Everyone dies, Vecked. And only the strong get their dreams." His face twisted in a snarl. "Sometimes."

Smoothing his face with an effort, he began muttering under his breath. "Soon, very soon...I'll be free...quite a joke, even for me..." Laughing softly, he scrubbed a hand through his hair.

I don't deserve to live.

Dyran piloted the ship towards Kataka, hoping he'd make it in time to hand over the Virus and regroup with the UO.

Highwind looked over at him. "Dyran, you should see this."

"Let me guess, the U.O, they're retreating from the world," Dyran said, looking at the screen.

Highwind nodded. "It seems after Enigma's first attack, all the forces pulled out except for a mediocre force. It seems they only suffered minimum casualties as well, and have Enigma...contained."

Dyran nodded. "I hope he knows what he's doing."

Highwind's eyes hardened. "That is, if his goal is worth reaching."

Dyran didn't answer, but pushed the engines to a new level.

 

"Right," Xane nodded after a minute. "Just go take a rest Vecked. The last thing we need is a Phoenix addicted to drugs. You, Xardius, and Wing are crazy enough, already."

 

OOC: And getting crazier.

BIC: Xardius gave Xane a weird look. "You think I'm crazy?"

He cocked his head as if listening to a voice inside his head, then focused again on Xane.

 

Vecked glanced at Xane. "These calm the nerves, you idiot. If I didn't take these I couldn't even get a steady aim... and if I can't aim I die, I go straight to hell..."

 

"Three bucks says you're going there anyway," Xardius muttered under his breath.

 

Vecked glanced at Xardius, before looking back down. "Guys... I have a plan, about the Virus. The Skypit's in Kingdom Hearts. The Dark Side. Its space temperatures out there, we go we all die. Not even a space suit could protect us... so I'm thinking, what if we gather Light User's? Send Saak's meeting group in, with the Light Users protecting them from the cold and the darkness. They go in, set up a teleporter near the Skypit. We go in, from the Light worlds, and end this thing... what do you guys think?"
