Has anyone else noticed that more and more games are using them? I find them lame, they take the challenge out of games and make everything stat based.
It's a common stable of the gaming, and most importantly the rpg world. Most companies use it to play it safe because lets face it, a full action rpg can go from being the pride of a company's programming skill to the bottom of the barrel for not keeping the system tight. Square and Blizzard a just a few people that got it right.
Ew. I hate turn based style. I think it's pretty boring and it pretty much means you're going to get hit by your enemy each time unless you get lucky and your character dodges the attack.
I totally agree i hate the turn based games! The only one that i really like is Pokemon. I think they are lame!!
Turn based games just happen to be my favorites. I love getting stuck in the middle of a boss and just taking time to think out my stragety instead of (taking a game like KH2 for example) being able to button mash your way out.

1:Wait? it barley takes long for the AI to attack. 2:If the game has an ATB then I have no clue what the feck your talking about by "wating for them to get a chance to attack you"
i mean that when you're done with your attacks in a turn based game, the enemy has it's turn to attack, in a game like kh you can dodge with out giving them a chance to attack,
More and more games are using them? I beg to differ. Turn-based was definitely the most popular type of gameplay for most RPGs in the past, but lots of developers have turned to real-time gameplay. There are a lot more action RPGs out there now--I don't think there's a single PS1 RPG that has featured real-time gameplay (I may be wrong, however). As well, turn-based gameplay has seen some changes that make it more 'real-time' than before. For example, it's true in older RPGs you could literally take a break during a boss battle when it's your turn (as monsters won't attack you until you've completed your turn). However, many RPGs that still feature turn-based systems really force you to press the pause button before taking breaks because even if it's your turn and you remain in-active, enemy monsters will still continue to hit you (as they run off their own independent attack delay).
xekushi, have you even visited your video game store recently? There are more action RPG's now than in the past. In the past, we had FF 7, Pokemon, (insert RPG here)...now we basically have Kingdom Hearts and some other video game that I can't think of at the moment. The point is that the turn based system is getting old, yes, yet heaps of people still love. If you don't like that type of system, don't play it then. It's that simple.
Star Ocean 3, Radiata Stories, .hack//G.U., Kingdom Hearts, Rogue Galaxy; all of these are action RPGs. In some respects, Final Fantasy XII's battle system could merit itself as almost being a true action RPG. As for the future, Shirokishi (White Knight Story), VsXIII, the new KH project all seem to be heading the direction of action RPG. Turn-based gameplay is actually turning out to be a dying breed, at least in its *true* form. Real-time battle has become far more appealing in gameplay design over the past few years.
Star Ocean: The Second Story was on ps1, and I think thats a 'real time' as you run around the field, attack as frequently as you want, and can avoid enemy attacks by backing off, while the computer AI controls your party members
Okay sorry to make it seem bigger then it was, I was kinda annoyed at something else at the time. Anyway, I have visited my local gaming stores as of late and it seems the most common games are the FPS. Not many RPGs at all and what I usually do see, its a turned based. But I'm not saying button mashers are better games, its just i like to run around with next to no armour and do my worse apon any foe I may see. Games like Monster Hunter alows me to do such but games like Final Fantasy just plain mean I've got no chance. And i say theres more of an adrenaline rush when you got no time to think.
